Quick tips: sleep over vs. oversleep

Zach McLaughlin

You were supposed to wake up at 7 AM but you were tired and didn’t wake up until 8. Did you sleep over or oversleep?

Well, if it wasn’t intentional (you didn’t mean to do it), you overslept, which means “to sleep past the time you planned or wanted to wake up, usually by accident.” Sleep over, on the other hand, means “to stay the night at another person's home.” Totally different!

And if you stayed in bed intentionally, you can say that you slept in, which means “to stay in bed and sleep past your normal wake-up time, usually on purpose.”

Also, we often (but not always) oversleep or sleep in because we stay up late the night before, which means “to remain awake and out of bed past your usual bedtime.”
