This Summer: A New Chapter - I Graduated and I’m Back

Weekly Topic: Something I learned during the summer

Cindy Colijn

This summer has been a really special one for me. After taking some time away from Cafetalk to focus on my studies, I finally completed my Master’s degree in International Development Studies, specialising in Migration & Development.

And now, I’m back!

I’m returning with a slightly new lesson concept, but I still want my Cafetalk space to feel the same way: warm, friendly, practical, and comfortable.

This time, I’ll mainly be offering three lessons:

Indonesian for Everyday Life: As a native Indonesian speaker, this is my main teaching area. We can work on beginner Indonesian, everyday conversation, pronunciation, useful expressions, travel Indonesian, and Indonesian culture. My focus is practical language that you can actually use in real-life situations.

Everyday English Conversation Practice:
A friendly speaking space for learners who want more chances to actually use English. We can talk about travel, work, culture, hobbies, food, daily life, or anything that interests you. As a non-native English speaker myself, I understand that sometimes the hardest part is simply feeling comfortable enough to speak.

Let’s Explore the Real World: This is my new lesson inspired by what I studied during my Master’s degree. We can explore topics like migration, culture, identity, belonging, inequality, education, cities, climate and migration, and global development. It’s not a formal academic class. We might use a photo, short article, question, or real-life situation and simply explore different perspectives together.

So yes, I graduated this summer, but I think what I gained most was not only a degree. I also gained more curiosity, more questions, and more things I’d love to share and discuss with others.

I’m really happy to be back on Cafetalk, and I hope to see some familiar faces and meet some new learners too!
