Hello everyone!
Autumn is one of my favorite seasons in Miyagi.
Every year, my family has a small autumn tradition. We visit Izumigatake and take the ski lift to the top.
In winter, of course, it is a ski area. But in autumn, it becomes a beautiful place to enjoy the changing colors of the leaves.
From the top, you can see the mountains, the orange and red autumn leaves, and even the ocean in the distance.
My sons also love it there because they can catch red dragonflies.
For them, the view is nice, but the dragonflies are probably more exciting!
I like that kind of simple family tradition. It is not too far from home, but it still feels special. Every year, when we go there, I feel like autumn has really arrived.
A place I want to visit this autumn
This autumn, there is another place I would love to visit with my family.
Nagoya.
More specifically, I would like to take my sons to Legoland.
My sons love Lego. They can build with it for hours. Sometimes they follow the instructions carefully, and sometimes they make their own strange, creative, and funny designs.
I really love watching that.
To be honest, I am not a big fan of amusement parks. They can be crowded, noisy, and tiring. But I think Legoland will be fun because it connects to something my sons already love.
And as a parent, seeing your children get excited about something can make the experience enjoyable for you too.
Lego and learning
When I think about Lego, I also think about learning.
When children build something with Lego, they make mistakes all the time.
A piece does not fit.
A tower falls down.
The shape looks wrong.
They have to take something apart and try again.
But usually, they do not say, “I failed. I will never build again.”
They just keep going.
They try a different piece.
They change the design.
They ask for help.
They laugh when something looks funny.
That is a wonderful attitude for learning English too.
Mistakes are part of learning
Many students are afraid of making mistakes in English.
I understand that feeling.
Maybe you worry about grammar.
Maybe you worry about pronunciation.
Maybe you think other people will notice your mistake.
But the truth is, mistakes are critical for learning.
If you never make mistakes, it usually means you are only using English that is already easy for you.
Mistakes show that you are trying something new.
That is how growth happens.
People want to help you
Another thing I want students to remember is this...
Most people don't care if you make a mistake when speaking English.
They are usually not judging you.
They are listening to your meaning.
They are trying to understand you.
And if they are kind people, they will help you.
This is true in lessons too.
When a student makes a mistake, I do not think, “Oh no, that was so bad.”
I think, “Great. Now I can help.”
A mistake gives us something useful to work with.
Build your English like Lego
Maybe learning English is a little like building with Lego.
You start with small pieces.
A word.
A phrase.
A sentence.
A question.
A short conversation.
Sometimes the pieces fit together nicely.
Sometimes they do not.
But each time you try, you learn a little more.
And little by little, you can build something bigger.
My autumn hope
This autumn, I hope my family can enjoy our usual trip to Izumigatake and maybe also make a new memory in Nagoya.
I hope my sons can enjoy the autumn leaves, catch some red dragonflies, and build something fun at Legoland.
And for my students, I hope this autumn can be a season of trying.
Try a new sentence.
Try a new question.
Try speaking even when you are not sure.
Try making mistakes and learning from them.
You do not need to be perfect.
You just need to keep building.
