Quick tips: hold vs. take place

Zach McLaughlin

Now that we’re into September, lots of fall festivals aretaking place in my area, so I thought it would be a good time to talk about the difference between hold and take place when it comes to events!

Hold is transitive, so it can have an object.

Ex. My city isholding a fall festival this weekend.

This means that it can also be used in the passive voice, which is useful if you don’t know who is holding the event or if it’s not important to mention who is holding the event.

Ex. A fall festival is being held in my city this weekend.

Take place is intransitive, so it cannot have an object. Consider the following sentences:

Ex. My city istaking place a fall festival this weekend. (incorrect)

Ex. A fall festival is taking place in my city this weekend. (correct)

There are also a few other ways to say that an event is taking place, such as…

Ex. There’s a fall festival in my city this weekend.

Ex. There’s a fall festival going on in my city this weekend.

Ex. There’s a fall festival happening in my city this weekend.

Ex. We’re/They’re having a fall festival in my city this weekend.
