I decided to write a post about the flood in Nagoya that I recently witnessed. Even in a situation like this, there were definitely a few things that really impressed me!
Namely:
- Despite everything, the locals stayed incredibly calm, composed, and polite... I didn’t see any panic, rudeness, or erratic behavior at all! For instance, near the central subway station, there was a massive - absolutely huge! - line for taxis. Everyone, from the young to the elderly, just stood there peacefully, waiting their turn. Nobody tried to push ahead or cut the line...
- As it turns out, the emergency services handled the aftermath incredibly fast and efficiently. I just found out today that the subway was actually back up and running around 11 PM (and closed right at midnight, just like any regular day)... We were just out on our long, forced walk at the time (21 km on foot!) and had no idea... So we cluelessly walked the whole way, when we could have just taken the train... ?
- The water was surprisingly clean. After it receded, the most you could see on the ground was just sand and pebbles... No trash, no sewage, and no nasty debris whatsoever...
And lastly, there were very few casualties! Seeing the sheer force of the flood, the near-total absence of casualties is a huge relief!
So yeah, that's how it went.
