How I Stay Motivated After a Long Break from Soap Making

Weekly Topic: How I stay motivated after a long break

Tess Van

You know that feeling when you haven't made soap in weeks, maybe months? Your oils are on the shelf, your molds are collecting dust, and you just stand there thinking, "Where do I even start?"

I've been there. Life gets busy, energy drops, and sometimes one disappointing batch is enough to make you want to step away. Coming back can feel harder than starting the first time. But I've learned a few things that make restarting so much easier. Here's what helps me:

1. I start small.
I don't try a fancy swirl on my first day back. I make a simple, one-color batch with a recipe I already know. A small win brings the confidence back fast.

2. I remember why I love it.
For me, it's knowing exactly what goes on my skin, and the calm feeling of stirring, pouring, and watching a simple mix turn into something beautiful. When I reconnect with that feeling, the motivation follows.

3. I use the waiting time.
Cold process soap needs 4 to 6 weeks to cure. That waiting teaches patience! While a batch rests, I plan my next recipe, write notes, and dream up new color ideas. This way I stay inside the craft even when my hands are not busy.

4. I look at my old soaps.
I keep a few bars from earlier batches. Comparing them with my newer ones shows me how much I've grown, and that's the best motivation there is.

5. I create a little ritual.
I put on my favorite music, tidy my workspace, and lay out all my ingredients before I begin. It turns soap making into a special moment instead of a chore.

6. I refresh my safety habits.
After any long break, I review my safety steps: goggles, gloves, long sleeves, good ventilation, and careful measuring with a scale. Starting with good habits makes me feel calm and ready.

A gentle reminder
Taking a break doesn't mean you've lost your skills. Your hands remember more than you think. Every soap maker pauses sometimes, and every restart is just the next chapter.
