3 Italian Words That Confuse Everyone (and How to Master Them

Caffe Con Marina

I’m Marina. I teach Italian the easy way — one coffee at a time.

Ciao! I’m Marina, a native Italian teacher with 15 years of experience. Even I make mistakes sometimes. But after 15 years of teaching, I know exactly where the traps are. Today I’m sharing three Italian words that confuse everyone — from beginners to advanced learners.

1. “Sono annoiato” vs “Sono noioso”

Sono annoiato = I’m bored.
Sono noioso = I’m boring.

Same verb, different ending. One letter changes the meaning completely.

How to remember:

  • -ato → how you feel

  • -oso → what you are

Beginner:Sono annoiato. (I’m bored.)

Advanced:Che film noioso! (What a boring film!)

2. “Ho fame” vs “Sono fame”

In Italian, hunger is something you have, not something you are.

Ho fame = I’m hungry. (Literally: “I have hunger.”)

We use avere (to have) for:

  • Ho fame — I’m hungry

  • Ho sete — I’m thirsty

  • Ho freddo — I’m cold

How to remember: these feelings use avere, not essere.

Beginner:Ho fame. (I’m hungry.)

Advanced:Ho fame! Andiamo a mangiare? (I’m hungry! Shall we go eat?)

3. “Pesca” vs “Pesce”

Two similar words, two different meanings.

Pesca = peach or fishing.
Pesce = fish.

How to remember:pesca (with “a”) is the fruit or the activity; pesce (with “e”) is the animal.

Beginner:Il pesce è buono. (Fish is good.)

Advanced:Mi piace il pesce, ma non mi piace pescare. (I like fish, but I don’t like fishing.)

Conclusion:

Italian is beautiful, but it has some subtle traps. Knowing them is not a weakness — it’s a step toward mastery. In Italian we say “Sbagliando s’impara”: you learn by making mistakes.

That’s why my lessons are like a coffee among friends: relaxed, sincere, and without judgment.

Book a trial lesson and let’s have a coffee together.

See you next Tuesday for another Italian word with “Parole e Caffè”!
