What My Mom Taught Me About Languages

Weekly Topic: A person who has inspired me

The person who has inspired me most is my mom. She can speak four local languages, as well as English, and I have always been interested in how she learned them.

She was born in a mountain village and was the youngest of seven siblings. She grew up working hard, then moved to the city for university. Later, she moved to the capital to look for more opportunities. With each move, she had to learn a new language and understand the culture of each place. She had to adjust to new people and new surroundings each time.

I think that is one reason I enjoy learning languages today. During the pandemic, I started brushing up on my second local language. This year, I started learning my third. In the future, I would also like to continue learning Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.

When I think about my mom, language is more than something you study from a book. It is something that helps you understand people and find your place in a new environment. Watching her move from one place to another taught me that learning never really has to stop. There is always another language, another place, or another way of seeing the world to discover.
