What I Miss About Living in Tokyo

Hello! I'm Asami, a Japanese tutor originally from Tokyo.

I currently live in Gifu, a city in central Japan.

Living outside Tokyo has made me realize how many little things I took for granted!

Today, I'd like to share four things I miss about living in Tokyo.

1. The Subway

In Tokyo, I could get almost anywhere by train or subway.

There were so many stations, and I rarely needed a car.

But in Gifu, there is no subway!

Public transportation is available, of course, but getting around isn't always as convenient as it was in Tokyo.

I never thought I would miss the subway so much!

2. Mobile Suica

In Tokyo, I loved the convenience of using Mobile Suica.

I could use my smartphone for transportation without carrying a physical commuter pass.

However, I can't get the type of Mobile Suica commuter pass I need for my current commute in Gifu.

It's a small difference, but it reminds me how convenient life in Tokyo was.

3. The Night Views

One of my favorite things about Tokyo is its beautiful skyline at night.

Tall buildings, colorful lights, and the city stretching into the distance...

I miss those views!

Gifu has its own beautiful scenery, especially its mountains and nature.

But sometimes, I just want to see the bright lights of a big city again.

4. Personal Space

This might sound a little funny, but I also miss the social distance between people in Tokyo!

Tokyo is crowded, but people often respect each other's privacy.

In a smaller city, people can sometimes feel a little closer, both physically and socially.

Some people love that friendly atmosphere.

Personally, I prefer having a little more personal space!

Every City Has Its Own Charm

Of course, there are many good things about living in Gifu, too.

Life in Tokyo and life in Gifu are simply different.

Moving away from Tokyo has helped me appreciate the city where I grew up even more.

What about you?

Do you prefer living in a big city or a smaller city?

And what do you miss most about your hometown?

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
