Ciao! Welcome back to "Parole e Caffè". I'm Marina, an Italian teacher with 15 years of experience. Today, we're not learning a single word, but a beautiful Italian tradition.
No pressure. No complicated grammar. Just a little story about kindness.
Let's begin.
The expression of the day is: CAFFÈ SOSPESO
In Naples, there is a beautiful tradition called caffè sospeso. In English, we can call it a "Pay It Forward Coffee".
The idea is simple: you go to a bar and order a coffee, but you pay for two. You drink one, and the other is left there for someone else.
It is ready for whoever needs it. Then, a person walks in and simply asks: "C'è un caffè sospeso?" ("Is there a coffee waiting?"). The barista smiles, and gives it to them.
It is a small, anonymous gift. No names, no questions. Just a little act of kindness.
A little Italian for you:
The word sospeso means "left for later" or "waiting". It comes from the verb sospendere. In this tradition, it means a coffee that waits patiently for someone.
The "Caffè" connection:
This tradition was born in Naples after the Second World War. Many people were struggling. It was a simple way to offer help, quietly and with respect. A warm coffee, waiting for someone.
I believe that learning a language should be like this. A warm coffee shared with a friend. No pressure. Just kindness. And the quiet knowledge that someone is there for you.
Next Tuesday:
Another word, another coffee. Until then, enjoy your coffee!
A presto,
Marina - Caffè con Marina
