Hello everyone! Teacher Howard here.
As the holiday season approaches, I’ve been thinking back to what Christmas was like when I was growing up in England during the 1970s and 1980s. Christmas back then had a very special, simple magic!
?? 3 TV Channels & The Queen’s Speech
Before smartphones and streaming services, British families gathered around a glowing box television. There were only three or four TV channels! Everyone eagerly checked the Christmas Radio Times magazine to highlight which holiday specials to watch. At 3:00 PM on Christmas Day, the whole nation sat down together to watch the Queen’s Christmas Broadcast.
?? Tins of Sweets & Paper Crowns
Christmas dinner was a grand event! We pulled traditional Christmas Crackers with a loud BANG!, put on colorful paper crowns, and read silly jokes. Afterward, we tucked into homemade mince pies and a giant metal tin of Quality Street or Cadbury Roses chocolates—everyone racing to grab their favorite wrapped sweet before anyone else!
?? Simple Magic & Evening Games
On Christmas Eve, children hung up stockings at the end of their beds, leaving out a mince pie and a glass of milk for Father Christmas (plus a carrot for Rudolph!). Christmas Day ended with board games like Monopoly or Charades, surrounded by twinkling tree lights and paper tinsel chains across the ceiling.
