Hello, everyone!
Halloween is just around the corner! When you think of Halloween, you might imagine pumpkins, spooky costumes, candy, and trick-or-treating. But have you ever wondered whether people in China celebrate Halloween, too?
The answer is yes, but not everyone celebrates it!
Halloween is not a traditional Chinese holiday, but some people, especially younger generations and people living in big cities like Shanghai and Beijing, enjoy celebrating it. You might see Halloween parties, costume events, themed decorations in shopping malls, and people dressing up to take photos with friends.
Compared with the United States, where trick-or-treating and decorating houses are popular traditions, Halloween celebrations in China are generally more limited and often take place at specific venues or organized events.
China also has a traditional festival called 中元节 (Zhōngyuán Jié), or the Ghost Festival. Although both holidays have connections to spirits, they have different histories and customs. The Ghost Festival is associated with traditional beliefs and remembering the deceased, while modern Halloween is often about costumes, parties, and having fun.
