A True Story by Your CafeTalk Tutor
The Weekly Countdown
TICK-TOCK, TICK-TOCK!
Back when I was a young boy growing up in the 1980s, Thursdays were the absolute best day of the week.
In those days, front doors were rarely locked—neighbors trusted each other, and family just let themselves right in. Every single Thursday afternoon without fail, the front door would click open, and in would walk two of my favorite people in the world: my Grandma and my Auntie Anna.
They brought warmth, smiles, and the cozy smell of raincoats... but best of all, Auntie Anna would reach into her bag and pull out my weekly comic. No knocking required—just pure, regular joy arriving straight into the hallway.
Pure Magic on Newsprint
SPLOT! KER-POW! BLAM!
The moment that comic was in my hands, the rest of the world disappeared.
I’d sprawl out on the living room carpet, turning those colorful newsprint pages packed with cheeky rascals, hilarious mischief, and snappy sound effects. I wasn’t reading because someone told me I had to—I was reading because I couldn't wait to see what happened on the very next page!
And then came Christmas morning...
Wrapped in shiny paper under the tree was the ultimate prize: The Big Hardcover Annual.
Ninety-two pages of non-stop stories, puzzles, and full-color adventures! I didn't just read that book once; I read it over and over until the spine cracked and every single joke was etched into my memory.
Why I Teach Today
Decades have passed since those Thursday visits with Grandma and Auntie Anna, but that spark never left me.
That experience taught me something powerful that shapes how I tutor on CafeTalk today:
- Reading shouldn't feel like a chore. It should feel like an adventure!
- Learning happens naturally when children are truly engaged and having fun.
- Confidence grows when a tutor meets a student with the same warmth, humor, and encouragement that Auntie Anna and Grandma brought into our home every week.
