The Book Character I’ll Never Forget (And Why We Would Be Best Friends)

Peace smiles

When people ask about unforgettable book characters, they usually name someone incredibly noble, like Sherlock Holmes or Harry Potter. But if I’m being completely honest, the character who permanently took up residence in my brain isn't a hero at all.

It’s Ove from Fredrik Backman’s novel, A Man Called Ove.
Ove is a 59-year-old Swedish man who is, without a doubt, the world’s ultimate grump. He is the kind of neighbor who walks around his neighborhood every single morning at 6:00 AM, checking to make sure nobody has parked their bicycle incorrectly or left a stray piece of garbage on the sidewalk. He doesn’t smile. He doesn’t do small talk. He views the entire modern world—especially people who can’t back up a car trailer properly—as a personal insult to his intelligence.
The first time I read the book, Ove actually made me laugh out loud. His stubbornness is spectacular. He is furious that computers have replaced pencils, and he treats his Saab car like it is a sacred religious artifact. We all know someone a little bit like Ove—that one relative or neighbor who treats a minor rule violation like a international crisis.
But here is why I will never forget him: underneath that terrifyingly grumpy exterior, Ove has a heart the size of a planet.
As the story unfolds, a chaotic young family moves in next door and accidentally smashes into his mailbox. Instead of leaving him alone, they force their way into his life. They bring him homemade food, force him to help them fix things, and even make him rescue a half-frozen, mangled stray cat. And that’s when you realize Ove isn't mean; he’s just fiercely loyal, deeply lonely, and fiercely protective of the people around him. He expresses his love not with hugs or sweet words, but by fixing your radiator or fixing your broken bicycle chain while grumbling under his breath.
I love Ove because he is beautifully flawed and completely human. He taught me that some of the kindest people in the world are hidden behind the roughest, grumpiest shells.
