[Japanese Culture & Language]

Why are dates so tricky to read in Japanese? ("Tsuitachi," "Futsuka"...)

"Tsuitachi" (1st), "Futsuka" (2nd), "Mikka" (3rd)...

When studying Japanese, have you ever felt that reading calendar dates is just too difficult?

You might want to say, "Why can't we just say Ichi-nichi, Ni-nichi?!"

I completely agree with you!

Actually, there is a piece of Japanese history hidden behind these unique readings.

They originate from "Yamato Kotoba" (native Japanese vocabulary), which has been used in Japan since ancient times.

Here is how numbers were counted in ancient times:

  • 1: Hi

  • 2: Fu

  • 3: Mi

  • 4: Yo

  • 5: Itsu

  • 6: Mu

  • 7: Nana

  • 8: Ya

  • 9: Kokono

  • 10: Too

In ancient Japanese, the word for "day" was "ka."

That is why:

  • Itsu + ka = Itsuka (5th)

  • Mu + ka = Muika (6th)

Even the way we count items—hitotsu, futatsu, mittsu...—comes from this same "Yamato Kotoba" system.

Trying to memorize everything by heart can feel overwhelming, but once you know the rule behind "Hi, Fu, Mi, Yo...",doesn't it feel a little more accessible?

Beyond just memorizing grammar and words, I would love to help you discover the fun aspects of Japanese language and culture along the way!
