Idiom: Green with Envy

2016年12月6日

Green with envy is an English idiom meaning you are envious/jealous of someone or something.

What is Envy??

Envy is a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else's possessions, qualities, or luck. Wanting what isn't yours.

If you say someone was "bitten by the green-eyed monster", it means that they are totally consumed by jealousy.

Where did this idiom come from??

Before Shakespeare’s days, a pale (green) complexion was associated with fear, illness, and poor humor. The origin of the idiom 'green with envy' is believed to come directly from the great William Shakespeare himself. In Othello, Iago warns Othello: "Beware, my lord, of jealousy; it is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on."

How to use these idioms in daily conversation??

1. My new car made my neighbor green with envy.

2. Bob was green with envy that I won first place.

3. Sara's going off to Hawaii for three weeks and we're all green with envy.

4. Tammy got bitten by the green-eyed monster when Carrie bragged about how great her husband was.

5. It's the green-eyed monster that rears its ugly head every time a girlfriend gets a new job, a new house - or a new man.

6. Some people suffer from the green-eyed monster called envy.

Have a great day!!
