Idiom: Having a Green Thumb

2016年12月7日 | 2 コメント

(Having a) Green Thumb is an English idiom meaning that you are very skilled in the garden/with plants.

I, myself, am lacking in a green thumb. I kill all plants I touch. Not on purpose of course!! It just kind of happens.

My grandmother, on the other hand, has a green thumb. She has a beautiful garden and healthy indoor plants.

Where did this idiom come from??

There are two theories as to where this idiom originated from.

1. England’s King Edward I, who enjoyed eating fresh green peas and was said to regularly give prizes to the serf who could display the greenest thumb from shelling them.

2. It comes from the fact that repeatedly handling clay pots encrusted with algae will stain a gardener's thumb (and probably fingers) green.

Examples:

1. Alice, looking at the beautiful garden, said to Jamie "You must have a powerful green thumb!!"

2. Mary asked Alex to watch over her plants while she was on vacation. Alex replied "I don't have much of a green thumb. You might want to ask Jerry instead."

3. "Rachel can grow anything!! She has the best green thumb in town!!" exclaimed Seth.

Have a great day!!
