Ending -ED Sound(s) :: Pronunciation??

2017年1月31日

Hey Everyone!!

I've noticed during my reading lessons that most students have trouble remembering how to properly pronounce the ending -ed sound in words.

So, I'm going to go over how to properly pronounce the ending -ed sound.

There are different ways to pronounce the ending -ed sound.

1. "-id"

2. "-t"

3. "-d"

Here is a chart to help explain:

If the base verb ends in one of these soundsexample base verb*example with -edpronounce the -ed asextra syllable? /t/ want wanted /ɪd/ yes /d/ end ended unvoiced /p/ hope hoped /t/ no /f/ laugh laughed /s/ fax faxed /ʃ/ wash washed /ʧ/ watch watched /k/ like liked voiced all other sounds, eg play played /d/ allow allowed beg begged

Reference: (https://www.englishclub.com/pronunciation/-ed.htm)

So the sound you make all depends on the ending sound of the base (main) verb.

Here are some more examples:

1. I hated the way she spoke. (-id)

2. I wished he would just go away. (-t)

3. I begged my mom to leave. (-d)

If you're interested in working on improving your pronunciation, take a look at my reading lesson!! I have several different books of different levels and styles to use, or we can use a book/article of your choice.

Have a great day!!
