May is the month where Spring is fully in bloom; lots of beautiful flowers and sunshine, warmer and longer days, and lots of new life is born during this month!!

With new life, comes new mothers, which is why this is one of the best months to celebrate Mother's Day!!

But did you know, that there are lots of other holidays this month?? Some very strange and unusual holidays that are mostly forgotten about or not celebrated.

Here is a list of some of my favorite unknown May holidays!!

1 May: Save the Rhino Day

Save the Rhino Day encourages people to be aware of, and support efforts to save the Rhinoceros from extinction. Hunters kill rhinos for sport; poachers kill them for their horn. The horn of the rhino has been used in medicines, for making knife handles, carved statues, and lots of other things. They are currently on the critically endangered list and need help.

4 May: Star Wars Day

Star Wars Day is May the Fourth, because of the famous quote from the movies "May the Force (Fourth) be with you". This day was created by accident in 2005, when a German interview translated this famous Star Wars quote to "We are with you on May 4th". Many believe that this holiday would've eventually been created without this mistake, though.

8 May: No Socks Day

No Socks Day is a copyrighted holiday set up by the company Wellcat.com. They created this holiday to help lower your laundry load to help the environment and to enjoy the sun on your toes. Washing your feet is mandatory for this holiday, but toenail polish is optional. 

14 May: Dance Like a Chicken Day

We aren't exactly sure where this holiday comes from, but everyone loves dancing to the Chicken Dance song!! There isn't much reason to participate, so here is a day dedicated just to this dance :)

22 May: World Goth Day

World Goth Day was created in 2009 in the United Kingdom and quickly spread worldwide. Today is all about celebrating the Goth culture and expressing your inner Goth.

27 May: Sun Screen Protection Day

This is a favorite holiday of mine because I have very light skin and burn very easily. Sunscreen is my best friend during the summer!! The purpose behind this day is to educate people on the importance of protecting their skin against the harmful UV rays from the sun.

30 May: Water a Flower Day

This day is self-explanatory. Find a flower, any flower, and water it. This is a good holiday for me as I forget things very easily and have accidentally killed many plants because I'll forget to water them. So, if you have any plants (with or without flowers) makes sure to give them the water they need on this day!! ...And every other day ;)
