A Gentle Start: Systematic Chinese for Children
Description
Who this course is for
This course is for children just starting out with Chinese, or with very little exposure so far. If your child isn't yet comfortable reading pinyin, knows only a handful of characters, or understands some words but hesitates to speak, this is a good place to begin.
The 25-minute lesson suits younger children well. Each session focuses on one small, concrete theme — colours, animals, numbers — and keeps a fairly quick pace to hold their attention.
What we'll cover
The goal is straightforward: to build a solid foundation. We start with pinyin — recognising sounds and how they blend — then gradually move into basic character recognition and writing. Along the way, we pick up everyday vocabulary and simple sentence patterns, with plenty of listening and speaking practice throughout.
I use children's textbooks like 《YCT》 and 《Easy Steps to Chinese》, but also bring in picture cards, songs, and little games. Children learn best when the lesson feels engaging, not just efficient.
My teaching style
My approach is gentle and patient. I encourage children to try, and I want them to know mistakes are completely fine. The last thing I want is for a child to feel pressure. My only real expectation is that, over time, they come to feel that Chinese class is something to look forward to. Once that feeling is there, progress tends to follow.
About the trial lesson
You're welcome to book a 15-minute free trial. I'll do some simple activities with your child to get a sense of where they are, without it feeling like a test. Afterwards, I'll share my impressions: what I noticed about their current level, and a sensible starting point if we continue.
