Are you interested in world events but find English news headlines or political wording a bit overwhelming? Understanding the "why" behind the news is just as important as understanding the words on the page. In this lesson, we will dive deep into current events to bridge the gap between language learning and global awareness.
This lesson will cover the following:

Analyze Current Events: We will look at news items through a historical and geopolitical lens. I provide a neutral American perspective to help you understand the global impact of U.S. and international politics.

Master Complex Vocabulary: English news uses specific vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. We will break down difficult grammar and newspaper terms so you can read major publications with confidence.

Practice Discussion: We will engage in thought-provoking conversations, helping you develop the ability to express your own opinions on complex topics in English
My approach is "Professional but Low-Stakes". I believe the best learning happens when you feel comfortable. While we deal with "serious" topics, my classroom is a relaxed, fun, and casual environment. You don't need to be an expert to join, you just need to be curious.
My goal isn't to tell you what to think, but to provide you with the linguistic tools and international context that might be harder to find in a local environment. My goal is to help you discover your own opinions and perspective, and to be able to communicate it in English smoothly.
Whether you want to discuss the latest headlines or dive into the history behind a specific topic, I will tailor the materials to your interests. If you have a particular topic or article you would like to explore, please give me at least 12-hours notice to prepare a lesson that will best meet your needs.
While my primary language is English, I have experience working with Japanese students and understand the unique challenges of the language barrier. I'll work with you if any misunderstandings come up (日本語は少しだけ話せます。). I have been teaching here on Cafetalk for over a year, and I will use that experience to create the best environment possible for you to learn.
