Description
Lesson Plan: Understanding Tenses
Grade Level: Intermediate ESL students
Duration: 60 minutes
Objectives:
- Students will identify and use the present simple, present continuous, past simple, and future simple tenses.
- Students will understand the context in which each tense is used.
Materials:
- Whiteboard and markers
- Handouts with tense explanations and examples
- Worksheets for practice
- Projector (if needed for visuals)
- Timer (for activities)
Lesson Outline

Introduction (10 minutes)
- Start with a brief review of what tenses are and their importance in communication.
- Ask students to share examples of different tenses they know.

Presentation (15 minutes)
- Introduce each tense one by one:
- Present Simple: Use for habits and routines. Example: "I eat breakfast at 7 AM."
- Present Continuous: Use for actions happening now. Example: "I am eating breakfast."
- Past Simple: Use for completed actions in the past. Example: "I ate breakfast at 7 AM yesterday."
- Future Simple: Use for actions that will happen. Example: "I will eat breakfast at 7 AM tomorrow."
- Write examples on the board and highlight keywords (e.g., always, now, yesterday, tomorrow).
- Introduce each tense one by one:

Guided Practice (15 minutes)
- Distribute handouts with sentences where students must fill in the correct tense.
- Pair students and let them compare answers and explain their choices.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)
- Provide a short worksheet with a mix of fill-in-the-blank and short answer questions that require students to use different tenses.
- Set a timer for 10 minutes and circulate to offer help.

Review and Assessment (10 minutes)
- Go over the worksheet answers as a class. Ask students to explain their reasoning for each tense.
- Conduct a quick informal assessment by asking questions and having students respond verbally in the correct tense.

Closure (5 minutes)
- Summarize the key points about tenses.
- Encourage students to think of sentences in their daily lives using different tenses.
Homework (optional):
- Ask students to write a short paragraph about their day, incorporating all four tenses.
