Learn common English words and phrases used in corporate environments that do not appear in normal day-to-day English language. What's appropriate and what's not? Learn with me today.
Description
Target Audience: Intermediate and Advanced English speakers who want to refine their English language skills in the workplace.
Introducing the topic: Communicating at Work (2 minutes)
Warm-up: Students will be presented with a list of various words. The challenge is to first read and pronounce the word correctly, and then to determine whether they believe this phrase is appropriate for a work environment. I will first say the word or phrase and have the student repeat the word or phrase after me. And then I will ask the student if it is ok to use this word or phrase at work, or not. (10 minutes)
Importance of Politeness at work: Discuss how the uses of polite words and phrases are highly important in the workplace, but are not so important in informal situations. (10 minutes)
Corporate vocabulary: Introduction of common corporate vocabulary. Students will learn meaning, form and pronunciation of each new piece of vocabulary. Imagery will be used to aide explanation of meaning (15 minutes)
Email writing: I will have prepared an email to be presented to the student, making a request for a piece of work. I will ask my student to write a response email using appropriate language. (20 minutes)
Final thoughts: Many words and phrases can be found solely in the workplace, and they don't always mean the same thing as the textbook definition will have you believe. Homework - watch a YouTube video I will send to the student. (3 minutes)
