1. Myth-busting opener (5 min)
Ask the student: "What comes to mind when you think of Kenya?" Most say safari, lions, savanna. Gently challenge this: Kenya has over 50 million people, and most live in cities and towns, not the bush. Show a quick contrast: tourist Kenya vs everyday Kenya.
2. City vs rural life (8 min)
Talk about Nairobi: traffic, matatus (shared minibuses), tech hubs, fast-paced life. Then contrast with rural areas like Kakamega or Eldoret: farming, closer community ties, slower pace. Use this to introduce vocabulary: "urban," "rural," "commute," "livelihood."
Discussion question: "Is your country's capital very different from smaller towns? How?"
3. Food and daily routines (7 min)
Introduce a few Kenyan staples: ugali (maize meal), sukuma wiki (collard greens), nyama choma (grilled meat), chai (Kenyan tea, usually with milk). Share what a typical day looks like, breakfast, school or work, evening meal with family.
Discussion question: "What's a meal from your culture that always brings family together?"
4. Language and greetings (5 min)
Teach 3-4 simple Swahili phrases: Habari (How are you), Nzuri (Fine/good), Asante (Thank you), Karibu (Welcome). Mention Kenya's linguistic diversity, over 40 ethnic languages alongside Swahili and English.
