Listening strategies: what can you do before you listen to help prepare you to understand what are going to hear?

Listening skills:
  • Speech processing: you will be able to use an understanding of the phonology of English to help you decode a rapid stream of speech (sentence stress and rhyhm; how words blend together; understanding tone, pitch, and volume).
  • Discourse competence: you will be able to identify and use signposters and discourse markers - words and phrases the speaker uses to help you, the listener, follow the structure of the ideas they are communicating to you
