Description
Salve! (Hello) Let's learn Latin together. Latin was one of the most important languages of world history for over thousand years. This course will offer the student an opportunity to learn the basics of the language: its grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. It is also a chance to get a worldview of western history and culture. Latin is the basic of the Romance languages, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian. About 60% of English vocabulary is Latin vocabulary: learning Latin helps build English vocabulary and gives a strong understanding of grammar. Latin was a literary language in Europe from the Classical period (240 BC) all the way up until modern times. This course will start reading sentences right away and learning basic grammar and vocabulary. It also includes a brief overview of the history of Latin and the ancient world in which it flourished. Come join me for an adventure through history!
I will be happy to share what I know with students. I studied Latin for 30 years and passed a PhD exam in Latin at the University of Washington. Latin is an exciting and interesting introduction to the world of the Romans and the civilizations of Europe from the earliest times through the Mediaeval period and up to the Renaissance and beyond. I hope to hear from you. Carpe Diem! (Sieze the Day)
