Lesson Outline
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
   - Begin with a discussion on what makes a character memorable.
   - Ask students to name their favorite characters and discuss what they like about them.
   - Highlight the importance of character names and how they contribute to the character's identity.
2. Character Development Techniques (20 minutes)
   - Present different techniques for developing characters:
     - Backstory Creation: Have students create a brief backstory for a character. Prompt them with questions about their character’s childhood, important life events, and motivations.
     - Personality Traits: Introduce the concept of personality frameworks (like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or the Big Five) and ask students to classify their character using one of these frameworks.
     - Physical Attributes: Encourage students to think about their character's appearance and how it reflects their personality or background.
     - Flaws and Strengths: Discuss the importance of imperfections in creating relatable characters. Have students list at least one flaw and one strength for their character.
3. Naming Strategies (15 minutes)
   - Discuss the significance of a character's name. Explain how names can evoke certain associations or characteristics.
   - Provide strategies for creating effective character names:
     - Meaningful Names: Encourage students to choose names with meanings that resonate with their character's traits (e.g., “Hope” for an optimistic character).
     - Cultural Significance: Explore names from different cultures and how cultural background can enhance character depth.
     - Sound and Connotation: Discuss how the phonetics of a name can impact a character's perception. For instance, softer sounds might be associated with gentleness, while harsher sounds may imply strength or aggression.
   - Encourage students to brainstorm names for their characters based on these strategies.
4. Writing Activity (10 minutes)
   - Ask students to write a short paragraph introducing their character, including their name, key traits, and a brief backstory.
   - Prompt them to think critically about how their chosen name reflects their character and what first impression it might give to readers.
5. Sharing and Feedback (5 minutes)
   - Allow students to share their character introductions with a partner or in small groups.
   - Encourage them to provide positive feedback and suggestions for improvements regarding the names and character development.
6. Conclusion (5 minutes)
   - Review key points discussed in the lesson.
   - Encourage students to continue developing their characters and refining their names as they work on longer pieces of writing, such as stories or novels.
Assessment:
- Collect students' written paragraphs and provide feedback focusing on character development and the significance of their chosen names.
- Optionally, students can create a short presentation about their character in a subsequent class.
This lesson not only enhances writing skills but also encourages creativity in naming and character development, making it a valuable addition to the Writing & Naming category.
