1. Lesson background:
- Target: This lesson is great for intermediate to advanced level English learners. High school students to adults will find this lesson most enjoyable.
- Topic: A simple, straightforward debate about thought-provoking topics like: Is social media good or bad?
- Outcome/s: This lesson has many opportunities for practicing English speaking as well as critical and creative thinking in English and learning new vocabulary phrases and correct grammar. I will provide you with comprehensive feedback and homework after the lesson so that you can review your work.
- This lesson can be taken multiple times as a lesson pack (4-Lesson 'Simple Debate' Lesson Pack), as there are many different debate topics available, and we can build on your debate skills each time.
2. Lesson layout:
- Introduction: First off, we will say hello, and then I’ll introduce you to the debate topic. You can choose a theme for the debate topic, from: “Fun and Lighthearted”, “Ethical issues”, “Current Events”, and more. This will be decided before the lesson starts.
- Main activity: After introducing the debate topic, we will go through some simple rules and guidelines for debate, and you will get an opportunity to choose a side and formulate your own ideas before presenting them. As you speak, I will offer gentle guidance and help you to phrase your sentences in a natural way. After you finish presenting your ideas, I will present my ideas and then we will each get a chance to counter each other’s ideas in the rebuttal stage.
- Conclusion: We will recap the main points of the debate and talk about areas where you did well and areas where you’d like to improve.
