OVERVIEW
The passive voice is one of the most frequently used structures in formal English- in news articles, business reports, and academic writing- yet it is often taught in a dry, abstract way. This lesson grounds passive voice in the real world of money and business, where students can immediately see why the passive is preferred: it shifts focus from who did something to what happened, which is exactly what financial news writing does.
TOPICS COVERED
• Passive voice: be + past participle across multiple tenses
• Active vs. passive: choosing the right structure for the context
• Business and financial vocabulary: revenue, invest, inflation, transaction, budget, regulated
• Reading and interpreting financial news headlines
• Writing formal reports using passive constructions
SKILLS DEVELOPED
• Grammar- passive voice formation in present, past, and perfect tenses
• Writing- formal and semi-formal business register
• Reading- understanding news and report-style English
• Vocabulary expansion in professional and financial contexts
TEACHING METHODOLOGY
Rather than beginning with a grammar explanation, this lesson opens with a set of real newspaper-style headlines written in the passive. Students work out what they mean and discuss who or what might have done each action- which naturally leads into the grammar lesson itself. This discovery method ensures students understand the communicative purpose of the passive before they practise forming it.
The "Mystery Company" activity challenges students to describe a real business using only passive clues, building both grammatical accuracy and creative thinking. A short report-writing task at the end of the lesson consolidates the grammar in a format students may genuinely need in academic or professional settings. The teacher provides a clear model text before students produce their own, ensuring confidence at every stage.
WHO IS THIS LESSON FOR?
Designed for B1 to B2 learners who are moving towards professional or academic English. Particularly valuable for students who need English for work, university, or business contexts. Also excellent for exam preparation (B2 First, IELTS, TOEFL) where passive voice is frequently tested.
