DESCRIPTION: lessons on lexis will extensively improve your ability to understand and use words and phrases in written and spoken English. Lexis refers to the words or vocabulary and phrases of a language, how they are used, how they change forms in order to collocate or fit into sentences. Your ability to amass English words, understand and recognize them when they change forms or classes as well as use their various forms and classes in writing and speaking will assist you in confidently engaging in conversations or discussions and putting down your thoughts into written expressions in English. You will also be able to easily understand other speakers’ expressions, understand and enjoy English movies, news and other broadcast or electronic information clearly.
CONTENT: You will learn:
1. Word classes
2. Words in their root forms: Examples: destroy, locate, appear.
3. Word formation and Affixes: Prefixes and suffixes and how they are used to change the forms of the word classes (such as to create antonyms) and the meanings of words. Examples:
A. Instruct......instruction …. instructive ….instructively …… instructively …. intructional … instructionally...........instructor …
B. Destroy …..destruction ….. destructive ….destructively …. destroyer …… destroyable……. indestructible.
C. Decide ….decision ….decisive ….. decisively …..decider ….undecided ….indecisive ……indecision.
4. Phrase: Meaning
a. Kinds of phrases ( verb phrases, prepositional phrases, gerund phrases, participial phrases, infinitive phrases)
b. How phrases collocate with other words in sentences (Example: i. From now onwards …………. ii. Having lost the fight …………. iii. by and by iv. In other words ………. v. in the long run………….
5. Popular conversational English phrases.
6. Functional phrases: Using the above kinds of phrases as noun, adjective and adverb phrases in sentences.
7. Intensive speaking and writing drills: Drills on phrases and word formation as well as their collocation in sentence construction. Sentence construction will begin with simple sentences, then compound and complex sentences later.
8. Intensive writing drills involving phrases, word formation and collocation/sentence construction.
9. Phrasal Verbs: Phrasal verbs can impact English learning negatively. Poor understanding of phrasal verbs must have been inhibiting the learner’s study progress. The learner will learn common or everyday phrasal verbs such as: go against, give up, give in, look into, get along with, call off, break out, stand by, turn down, kick against, come up with, look forward to, put up with, pass away e.t.c. These and numerous other common phrasal verbs will be taught in relation to their uses, relevance and meanings in expressions. Those phrasal verbs with double meanings will be highlighted (e.g. Turn down: to refuse a request; to reduce the intensity of. Turn up: to appear; to increase the intensity or effect)
10. Idioms: Idioms can pose a serious challenge in a learner’s comprehension and use of English. Learners who are faced with lexis and structural challenges should take lessons on idioms, identifying them in expressions and interpreting them effectively for accurate understanding and use. A lot of everyday conversational idioms should be studied by the learner. Examples: By no means, By all means, To be at sea, Over the line, Get your nose in front, Blow someone’s cover, Blow one’s top, the downside of, In a pole position, To be over the top, Done and dusted, To smell a rat, To bring someone to book, To be all ears, To lay down arms, A cock and bull story, A short in the arm, To take up arms, Over the moon, Under the weather etc.
Conclusion: The learner should engage in intensive lessons without long period of interruption since this is a wide area but with massive rewarding results in the long run. These are just the lesson areas; each area will be comprehensively developed and designed in content before being taught. Each area will be broken down into several lessons or meetings. Lessons in each area will run from the simple to the complex. I am available to give more insight or answer more questions if required.
