Lesson Pack Details
Lessons should generally be booked chronologically, meaning that the second lesson should be booked after the first, and so on.
Description
Come and join me for this Book Club Lesson Pack! Let’s learn about the world of Earthsea and explore the first book in the series.
A Wizard of Earthsea is the first novel in Ursula LeGuin’s Earthsea series. In these classes we will look at the history and context of the novel, the plot (story), the symbols and language used in the book and how they are important for English-speaking culture. In every class, I invite you to share your ideas and opinions.
Class 1 – Introduction
In this class, we learn about the author, Ursula LeGuin. We will explore her influences and the fact that, although she was born and lived in the USA, her writing includes many themes from East Asian symbolism and spirituality. Why? We find out in this class.
We also look at a quick overview of the book, ‘A Wizard of Earthsea’.
Class 2 – The Story
In this class, we look at some elements of the plot of the book. We will read the beginning part together, where we are introduced to Sparrowhawk, who already appears to be a long-dead and legendary hero by the beginning of the book, and is known by his ‘true name’, Ged.
Class 3 – Symbols in the book
In this class, we explore some of the themes of the book and the symbols and their interpretations. We try to answer these questions:
- What is magic and how is it symbolised in the story?
- What is the symbolism of the dragons? Are they good or evil?
- What is the ‘shadow’ and what does it symbolise?
Class 4 – Language in the book
In this class, we look at the way in which the author, LeGuin, uses the English language to create a particular atmosphere and mood in the story. We explore some key parts of the text and learn how to recognise some linguistic techniques.
We will also do a recap of all previous classes and you can share any questions you have!
I hope you enjoy reading and exploring this book as much as I do!
