This is for people interested in Scottish Standard English (SSE) pronunciation, and who would like to compare it with other varieties of English.
Description
Are you an upper-intermediate to advanced English speaker?
Are you a linguist? Do you study linguistics?
Are you interested in different varieties of standard English?
Do you travel to, or plan to travel, to Scotland?
SSE is a variety of Global English and uses British English spelling conventions and vocabulary.
It should not be confused with Scots (also called Broad Scots), which is a closely-related collection of dialects officially recognised as a separate language from English.
Some Scottish people speak English with a strong Scots language influence, but Scottish Standard English is as easy to understand as other varieties of standard English.
In fact, it may be easier for you to pronounce than standard British English, because it is rhotic and has less vowels or diphthongs.
Here's one example:
"GO" is pronounced as one vowel sound (/go/) in SSE, but in British English it is pronounced /gəʊ/, which combines two vowel sounds, known as a diphthong.
In this lesson, I introduce the pronunciation of Scottish Standard English (SSE) and some vocabulary and idiomatic phrases (30 - 35 minutes)
There will also be time for conversation and discussion (20 - 25 minutes).
