Description

Pre-Socratic Philosophers (6th–5th century BCE):

  • Thales of Miletus is often considered the first philosopher in Western history. He proposed that water is the fundamental substance of all things.
  • Heraclitus emphasized the constant flux of the universe, famously stating, "You cannot step into the same river twice."
  • Pythagoras focused on mathematics and believed that numbers and their relationships governed the universe.
  • Parmenides introduced the idea that reality is unchanging, and that change and multiplicity are illusions.
