Description

Foreign-origin words (Katakana words) are inevitable when studying Japanese. The number of Katakana words has been increasing, and they are widely used in both business and daily conversation.

Many Katakana words have been adopted from English, but there are also "Wasei-eigo (和製英語)" words that are unique to Japan and differ in meaning from the original English.

For example, the term for a car's steering mechanism is "ハンドル" (handoru) in Japanese. In English, it is called a steering wheel, which is quite different. The reason for this distinction is not entirely clear, but it might be because handles on bicycles and motorcycles are referred to as bar handles, and handles on doors are called door handles. As such, items that are gripped and operated by hand seem to be grouped together as ハンドル.

In this way, let's enjoy learning Wasei-eigo by comparing it with the original expressions!
