Becoming A Better Speaker
Description
In this lesson, we are mainly focusing on speaking practice, reading aloud and learning new vocabulary words.
This lesson is great for Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced level students who want to practice and work on their speaking skills.
I will present a topic that is general, that has to do with real-life situations to make it easier for the student to engage and interact. The reading extract will be at the students level, to make it easier to understand and work through.
1) We will start with introducing the topic and what it is about, this is also a chance to explain and clarify what the lesson will be about so the student knows and is prepared.
2) We will then start with going through some vocabulary words that are between 5-10 words. We will learn how to pronuounce the word, learn the meaning and use pictures to help with understanding. Lastly we will have examples on how to use these vocabulary words in a sentence when speaking. This is another opportunity where the student gets exposed to more words and phrases.
3) Follwing that, we then proceed to the reading extract. Here we will read a real article that will tell use more about our topic. I will have the student read this article out loud while focusing on pronunciation and reading fluency. I will take note of any errors, mis-pronunciations and unknown vocabulary words or phrases. Once the student is done reading, we will. have a brief discussion about their understanding of the article, we will go over what I have noted while they were reading. This is to help the student be aware of their errors and to be provided with feedback and support while allowing the student to ask questions on things they are uncertain about regarding the article.
4) Once that is done, we will then move over to the discussion. This is allows the student to practise the vocabulary words learnt, practise their speaking skills while understanding their comprehension of the article. In this section, we will go through 2 discussions where will be answering questions. This is the interactive part of our lesson, where I will also be contributing to the discussion to allow the student to have a real-life feel of a conversation/discussion with another person.
5) When the discussion is done, I will provide the student with feedback on the lesson and provide useful tips on what they can do to improve on certain areas including excercises and activities. We will then end the lesson there.
