 What are Comparatives and Superlatives?

We use comparatives to compare two people, animals, or things.
We use superlatives to show the most or least of something in a group of three or more.

Comparatives

Form:

  • For short adjectives (1 syllable):
    adjective + -er + than
    ➜ Example: small → smaller than

  • For long adjectives (2+ syllables):
    more + adjective + than
    ➜ Example: beautiful → more beautiful than

Examples:

  • My house is bigger than your house.

  • Today is colder than yesterday.

  • She is more friendly than her sister.

  • This book is more interesting than the last one.

Superlatives

Form:

  • For short adjectives:
    the + adjective + -est
    ➜ Example: small → the smallest

  • For long adjectives:
    the most + adjective
    ➜ Example: beautiful → the most beautiful

Examples:

  • This is the tallest building in the city.

  • He is the fastest runner in the team.

  • That was the most exciting movie I’ve seen.

  • She is the most helpful person I know.
