Teach the student how to create a visual artwork that tells a story using composition, color, and symbolism.
Description
1. Warm-Up Discussion (5-10 min)
- “What’s a story you love—maybe from a movie, book, or real life?”
- Discuss how art can tell a story without words (e.g., paintings, comics, photography).
- Show famous examples:
- Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits (personal storytelling)
- Picasso’s Guernica (emotional storytelling)
- A scene from a graphic novel or animated movie
2. Choosing a Story (10 min)
- pick a theme:
- A memory or personal experience
- A fairy tale or myth reimagined
- An imaginary world or scene from a dream
- guiding questions:
- What emotions should your artwork express?
- What colors or objects could represent this?
3. Planning the Composition (15 min)
- Introduce composition rules (leading lines, focal points, foreground/background).
- Sketch a thumbnail (small rough draft of the artwork).
- Discuss the use of:
- Color psychology (red = energy, blue = calm, yellow = happiness)
- Symbolism (a broken clock for lost time, an open door for opportunity)
4. Creating the Artwork (20-30 min)
- choose their medium (drawing, painting, collage, digital art).
- Encourage experimentation with textures and layers.
- Provide feedback:
- “How does this part contribute to the story?”
- “Is there a way to make the focal point stronger?”
5. Reflection & Sharing (10 min)
- “What does your artwork say to the viewer?”
- Encourage them to name their piece and write a short caption.
- If comfortable, have them present their work and explain the choices they made.
