resources: (1) Table of martial art words in Japanese and the translation for each word in English (2) Picture showing martial art poses (3) video clip of a martial art class delivered in English a (4) short clips of martial art moves(2)
(1)
Lead in: After exchanging pleasantries. Ask the students what he enjoys most about his job as a martial artist and what he finds most challenging. (3mins)
Presentation: Using the pictures in (2) and other picture resources each body movement (e.g. left arm stretched, Knees bent, body leans forward, right leg stretched out, balance on right leg, balance on toes, weight on left leg, feet in v shape, right palm faced out, etc) is broken down. Table (1) is reviewed which shows the English translation of Japanese martial arts words. With these descriptive phrases more pictures with martial art are shared and described. The video clip (3) is played and notes are taken of the names for each move and the english words used to describe each move. (12min)
Practise: The video clip (4) is played. The student is asked to describe each move, by giving the details of each body movement. The student is commended and corrected where necessary. (5 min)
Production: 1 picture of a martial art pose is shown and 1 video clip of a martial art movement is made and the student is asked to give the name of the move and explain the details of each move. (5 min)
Homework: More clips are shared with student and student is asked to describe in next class.
