Speak like a Native - Master Idioms, Phrasal Verbs and Collocations
Idioms, phrasal verbs and collocations are expressions commonly used by native English speakers. In this lesson you'll learn how to recognize and understand them and start using them yourself to allow your English to sound more fluent and natural.

Idioms and phrasal verbs such as "a piece of cake" and "figure out" are commonly used by native English speakers. They often have a "figurative" or hidden meaning that is not always clear from the component words used to form them. For this reason, they can be difficult for English learners to understand if they are not already familiar with them.
In the same way collocations are word combinations that are commonly used together, and sound correct and natural. If you say you are "worried sick" or getting some "fast food" it sounds very natural and the meaning is clear. However, if instead you say "worried ill" or "quick food" it sounds unnatural and just wrong, as although the meanings of the substituted words seem the same, they are not used together in combination.
In this lesson you will learn all about these expressions and how to use them to enhance your English language skills and gain confidence in your conversational ability. You will be able to recognize and understand them when you hear them, and also start using them yourself to allow your spoken English to sound more fluent, natural and interesting. You will learn not only their meaning, but also how and when to use them and some background about their origins. And there will be plenty of time to practice using them during the lesson.
