Activity One: Interactive Storytelling

Toussaint L'Ouverture was already a free man when he joined the slave rebellion of 1791 - a group of slaves fighting against their masters. He trained with the Spanish military and fought against the French. When the French abolished slavery, Toussaint switched sides. He had fought in the slave rebellion of 1791, but he did not think the leadership was effective. His name, 'L’Ouverture', means ‘opening’. He was given this name because he was very good at finding openings in battle, good at finding the weaknesses of his opponents.

Why do people change sides in a fight? Would you ever do this?

L'Ouverture switched sides because the French abolished slavery. Eventually, he would lead the first (and only) successful slave revolt. That is why he is a freedom fighter. He began training slaves in guerrilla warfare, small groups of fighters. He was not happy with the leadership of other freedom fighters.

How did he lead the slaves to victory? What do you think?

L'Ouverture was a tactician and he trained his fellow slaves, his famous slogan "la liberté ou la mort" liberty or death. He preferred to die than to be a slave. He encouraged others to think this way. I have to admire that.

What do you think of freedom fighters? What does freedom mean to you?

He was eventually captured and died a prisoner. He ignored Napoleon’s orders and invaded what is now known as Haiti. L’Ouverture was responsible for the economic improvements in the region at the time. He repaired the damage done to Haiti by war. He started trading with neighbouring countries.

How do you think he felt?

Activity Two: Substitution Exercise

Recreation of Toussaint L’Ouverture’s story to be compared with popular American culture

Activity Three: Questionnaire

1.What is the most interesting thing about historical films, in your opinion?
2. Do you agree with discussing slavery in today’s world? Why/why not?
3. There is an assassin who killed people who owned slaves. How does this make you feel?
4. I worry that black history is never properly discussed, because we focus only on slavery, instead of African contributions to early medicine, music and farming for example. How much do you know about these things?
