サイモン先生には、大変お世話になりました。英語のエッセイを書くときは、いつも期限ぎりぎりで、構成は何とか組み立てるものの、表現力は酷いものでした。それでもまあ点数はもらえるので、英語力より内容が大切なのでしょうが、そうは言っても、教授からは英文の意味が不明で、何か所もコメントに「？」をつけられていました。安い添削を受けていたことがあるのですが、ネイティブではなかったため、教授や他のネイティブの友達に見せた時、独特な表現で違和感があると言われました。自分で、どういう添削をしてもらったら良いか色々考え、探した結果サイモン先生を見つけました。何故今までネイティブの先生にきちんと添削してもらわなかったのか、非常に後悔しました。先生は博士号を取得され、エッセイの書き方はプロなので、始めからお願いすれば良かったです。自分のエッセイの構成のどこが悪いか、なぜ意味の通らない文なのかを、まずは自分で考えるように指示をくださり、ヒントももらえます。だめならはっきりダメ出ししてくださるので、思い切って挑戦して書くことができます。以前お願いしていたところでは、文法などのチェックはしますが、自分の書こうとしていたことと、違う形に文章を直されてしまったりしたこともありましたし、サイモン先生のように構成や論理立てまで見てはくれませんでした。どの程度のエッセイで、何か課題なのかによって、どこまで厳しく見るかも変わってくるとは思いますが。そこは、必要に応じて本当に丁寧に見ていただいて、感謝しています。私の場合は、長い論文を何回かに分けて、パートごとに見ていただいたのと、１つのパートをまた添削してもらいたくて、考え直して構成を直したり、指摘された表現を考え直して再提出したりしています。それで、すごく洗練された良いものになっていきました。良い表現や、英語のエッセイでは使うべき表現、使ってはいけない表現などの作法も教えていただきました。もっと早くからお願いしていれば、習った表現をも覚えながら、使っていけたのにと思いました。本当にありがとうございました。 Thank you Dr. Simon.
