Junior high English is an important step in building grammar and vocabulary, which will form the foundation for the following year's of English studies. However, there are a lot of things to memorize, and if there is one thing you are bad at, it is a subject you will not understand. English is a great tool to connect with people in other countries. What a shame it would be to end up hating English! By repeating the basics over and over again, I try to help students gain confidence little by little.

The first time I came to Japan I realized that a lot of people wanted to learn French but couldn’t find any French speaking friends, or were too busy to take classes in a language school. When someone wants to learn French, it really makes me want to help them improve! This thought pushed me to study didactics and is pushing me to challenge myself everyday.

Besides the diary lesson, it is a conversation-based lesson. There are two types of lessons, "Japanese Conversation" and "Reading the News", but the content of both lessons varies from student to student. Most of my classes on Cafetalk are free conversation so students can set the agenda and choose a topic that is relevant to them and which helps them to improve their English in a way that is relevant to them, whether that is for work, study or travel.

I had some experiences of teaching Italian to some small groups of people in Osaka. Listening to what I say carefully and repeating it allows my students to increase their vocabularies little by little. Also, having a good conversation always makes the lessons enjoyable. I do not think students should push themselves hard. They should keep feeling a joy of learning throughout their lessons.

In order to really improve the English, studying English needs to be combined with those who speak English as their mother tongue. That is a precious secret. Without it, one cannot move forward while studying.

I try to make my lessons very relaxed and enjoyable and I think my students have fun learning. Always the time goes fast, so I think that's a good sign that we are having a good time. I always give written homework and I usually recommend that my students try to watch English TV or listen to podcasts in English.
