Study Tips for Rainy Days at Home

Rainy days always seem to change our energy. Things slow down, motivation dips a little, and staying in bed suddenly feels more appealing than studying.

But over the years of teaching English—and in my own life—I’ve learned something important: your learning doesn’t depend on perfect conditions. It depends on how you adapt to imperfect ones.

In fact, I often find that rainy days are the best days for me personally to slow down, do my reading, research, and have meaningful growth moments. There’s something about the quiet atmosphere that makes focus feel more natural and deeper.

Rainy days can become some of the most peaceful and productive study moments, if you approach them differently.

Here are my simple ways to stay focused when it’s raining outside.

☕ 1. Build a calm “rainy day” study space

Instead of fighting the mood, use it. Sit near a window, make a warm drink, and create a space that feels soft and comfortable. When your environment feels safe and calm, your mind follows.

2. Let the rain work for your focus

Rain is one of the best natural concentration tools. The sound creates a quiet background that helps reduce distractions. If needed, play soft rain sounds and let it become your focus soundtrack.

⏱️ 3. Keep study sessions light and steady

On slow days, your energy will naturally be different. That’s okay. Use short study blocks like 25 minutes with breaks in between. Consistency matters more than intensity.

4. Learn in a relaxed way

Not all learning has to feel like studying. Listen to English while resting, watch short videos, or read something you enjoy. Learning works best when it feels natural, not forced.

5. Speak, even if it’s just a little

Use the quiet time at home to speak English out loud. Read, repeat phrases, or talk about your day. These small moments build real confidence over time.

Final thought

Rainy days are not pauses in your progress. They are softer spaces where learning can still happen—just in a quieter, more reflective way.

For me, they are often the days where I grow the most through reading, reflection, and teaching—each one helping me become a better tutor and learner at the same time.

「うちの子、日本語を話してほしいのに、なかなか続かないんです」

海外で子育てをされている保護者の方から、よく聞くお悩みです。

日本語は、ただ覚えるだけの勉強ではありません。
お父さんやお母さん、おじいちゃんおばあちゃん、日本にいる大切な人たちとつながるためのことばです。

だからこそ、わたしのレッスンでは、まず「楽しい！」を大切にしています。

好きなことだから、おもしろい。
おもしろいから、できる。
できたから、もっとやりたい。

そんなふうに、日本語が少しずつお子さまの中に育っていく時間を作りたいと思っています。

【「やった！」「できた！」の声が聞きたい】

わたしが目指しているのは、子どもたちが思わず

「やった！」
「できた！」

と言ってくれるレッスンです。

日本語を学ぶ時間が、がまんの時間になってしまうと、
子どもたちは少しずつ日本語から離れてしまいます。

だからこそ、わたしは日本語を

「むずかしい」
「つまらない」
「できない」
で終わらせたくありません。

「もっと話してみたい」
「もっと読んでみたい」
「またやりたい」

そう思える時間を作りたいと思っています。

【好きなことから、はじめよう】

ゲームが好きな子。
アニメが好きな子。
恐竜が大好きな子。
絵を描くことが好きな子。
おしゃべりが好きな子。

子どもによって、興味の入り口はまったく違います。

だから、わたしのレッスンでは、その子の「好き」を大切にしています。

好きなことを入口にすると、子どもは自然と前向きになります。

日本語のレッスンだからといって、堅苦しい時間にはしたくありません。

笑いながら、遊びながら、話しながら。
気がついたら、日本語が口から出ていた。

そんな時間を大切にしています。

【日本語って、難しいの？】

日本語には、ひらがな・カタカナ・漢字があります。

「3種類も覚えるの？」
「うちの子にできるかな？」

そう感じる保護者の方も多いと思います。

もちろん、日本語は簡単な言語ではありません。
でも、一度に全部できるようになる必要はありません。

大切なのは、スモールステップです。

今日は「あ」が読めた。
今日は自分の名前が言えた。
今日は「すき」と言えた。
今日は一文で話せた。

そんな小さな成功を、ひとつずつ積み重ねていきます。

子どもが「できた！」と感じる経験を増やすこと。
それが、次のやる気につながります。

【安心できる環境を、大人が作る】

子どもが安心して学べるかどうかは、周りの大人の関わり方で大きく変わります。

まちがえても大丈夫。
すぐに答えられなくても大丈夫。
ゆっくり考えても大丈夫。

そう思える環境があってはじめて、子どもは声に出してみようと思えます。

日本語を話すことに自信がない子もいます。
恥ずかしがり屋の子もいます。
じっと座って学ぶより、動きながら学ぶ方が得意な子もいます。

だからこそ、一人ひとりのペースを見ながら進めていきます。

【「楽しかった！」がいちばんの合格点】

レッスンが終わったとき、子どもたちが

「楽しかった！」
「またやりたい！」
「できた！」

と言ってくれること。

それが、わたしにとって何よりうれしい瞬間です。

日本語は、すぐに完璧になるものではありません。

でも、楽しい経験を重ねることで、子どもたちの中に少しずつ日本語の芽が育っていきます。

その芽を、あたたかく見守りながら、一緒に育てていきたいと思っています。

【さいごに】

海外で子育てをしながら、日本語を続けていくことは、決して簡単ではありません。

でも、日本語は親子をつなぐことばであり、家族の思い出をつなぐことばでもあります。

「日本語を好きになってほしい」
「少しでも話せるようになってほしい」
「楽しく続けてほしい」

太陽に向かって伸びていく

野菜を育てていると、どんなに虫に食べられようとも、大雨が降ろうとも、太陽の光に向かってぐんぐん伸びていきます。

たとえ、栄養が足りず、実があまりならなかったとしても、そんなことは気にせずに太陽だけを見ているのです。反対に日当たりが悪いと、どんどん枯れていきます。

そして畑仕事で大切なのは、雑草が生えてこないように防草シートをかけておくことです。
雑草の生命力はすさまじく、野菜たちを倒してしまうほどの威力があります(笑)

野菜が育つ過程と、人が向かう先も同じです。

将来に対して漠然とした不安を抱えている人も多いと思います。
しかし、不安には防草シートをかけておいて、ただ太陽だけを見つめていれば、いずれ山ほどの収穫があるはずです。

きのうのニュースで、「日銀(にちぎん)」という言葉(ことば)を何回(なんかい)も

聞(き)いた人(ひと)も多(おお)いと思(おも)います。

日銀(にちぎん)は、「日本銀行(にほんぎんこう)」の短(みじか)い言(い)い方(かた)です。

日本銀行(にほんぎんこう)は、日本(にほん)のお金(かね)を管理(かんり)する

特別(とくべつ)な銀行(ぎんこう)です。

わたしたちが、使(つか)っている1,000円札(えんさつ)や、

10,000円札(えんさつ)は、この、日本銀行(にほんぎんこう)が発行(はっこう)しています。

そのほかに、どんなしごとをしているの？

また、日本銀行(にほんぎんこう)は、

物(もの)の値段(ねだん)や、景気(けいき)が大(おお)きく変(か)わりすぎないように、

お金(かね)の流(なが)れを調整(ちょうせい)しています。

ニュースでよく聞(き)く「金利(きんり)」も、

A Band 7.5 or higher on the IELTS Speaking exam???
In order to achieve this, you must understand how you are being evaluated. Here is what you have to know:
Lexical resource and fluency play an important role in your score. Relying too heavily on basic phrase such as; "I think.." shows a limited vocabulary range to the examiner and keeps you locked in the standard 6.0 bracket.

In order to instantly elevate your score in Part 2 and Part 3, use these high-tier, criteria-matching alternatives to articulate your perspectives with precision:

When you are completely certain: • "It is widely acknowledged that..."
• "From my personal standpoint, it’s undeniably clear that..."
* Why it works: These structures immediately assert your certainty using sophisticated, compound sentence frames.
When you want to show balance:• "I lean towards the view that..."
• "I hold the firm conviction that..."

Band 7.5+: "I hold the firm conviction that technological integration is fundamentally restructuring modern educational frameworks."(This on the other hand displays an elevated, fluid vocabulary and sophisticated lexical resources.)

小林愛実　横浜みなとみらいホール　ピアノコンサート6/16

初めてのみなとみらいホール。春にシャルルアムランさんが来ていてとっても行きたかったところ。

年一は行ってる愛実さんのコンサート。前半はショパン《舟歌》。

安定の愛実さんショパン。いつ聴いてもテクニックに不安がなく、安心して音楽の流れに身を任せられる。変なクセがなく自然。弱音が本当に美しい。個人的には彼女のショパンはエチュードが一番好き。この日の「舟歌」は透明な水面を眺めるような心地よさ。

続いてその空気感から流れ着いたかのような、ラヴェル「クープランの墓」。

最近毎晩のようにCharles Hamelinのラヴェルを聴いていたので、同じ曲でも弾き手によってこんなにも景色が変わるのかと改めて思う。

小林さんのラヴェルは、前のめりにならず落ち着いたテンポ。私の尊敬してやまないアムランさんは癖になるほど音楽の句読点をぶっとばしてロックに且つ音楽を流して美しく仕上げるのに対して、句読点を丁寧に収めていた。音楽のつなぎかたで音楽がガラッと変わる。細かな音の粒がきらきらと整い、どこを切り取っても美しいのは確か。最後の《トッカータ》がよかった。少しずつ熱を帯びながら頂上へ向かっていく流れが見事。

そして毎回思う。小林さんが弾くとクラシックが少しだけ現代の音楽になる。良い意味で白黒写真のような質感があって、それがラヴェルの洗練されたおしゃれさとよく似合う。

後半はシューベルトのソナタ。

シューベルトの長いソナタは、どんな名演でも気がつくと意識がどこかへ飛んでしまうことがある。笑。けど今回は目ぱっちり。

音と音の間にまで神経が行き届いていて、静かな場面も張り詰めた糸のような緊張感。中間部の少し混沌とした世界から最後のクライマックスへ向かう流れも素晴らしかった。

シューベルトって、この緊張感か構成力のどちらかが欠けると眠くなるか晩ご飯のことを考え始める（笑）、今回は最後まで物語の中にいた。

気づくと、その音の世界に深く連れていかれている。
音楽で物語を感じられるほどのテクニックと構成力があるピアニストは少ないのでこんな時間を味わえたことに感謝。
ps アンコールは3年連続でまさかと思いつつやっぱりトロイメライ笑
飽きないけど。とにかくリピです。

韓国語講師のMisatoです＾＾

今日はちょっと、
私のプライベートなお話をさせてください。

今でこそ
「通訳」や「韓国就職」という経験を強みに
韓国語講師をしていますが、

6年前の渡韓前日は、
楽しみな気持ちの裏側で、
「就労VISAの壁」にぶつかって、
ものすごく不安でもがいていました。

当時のブログには、こんなことを書いていました。

（当時の日記より一部抜粋）

今回面接を受けて、就労ビザの壁にぶち当たり、
どうにかしてこの壁を乗り越えようって
今もがいているところですけども……

美容師さんに韓国に行くと行ったら、
すごくびっくりされました。

でも、美容師さんが
『結局どうなるかは決まってるから大丈夫だよ』
って言ってくださったんです。

心配しすぎず、
まずは今できることを積み上げて
前に進むことだな、と思いました。

今振り返ると、あの時もがいた経験が、
韓国企業での仕事や通訳の経験に
つながっていたんだなと感じます。

もちろん、
ずっと前向きだったわけではありません。
「やっぱり諦めようかな」って落ち込んだり、
たくさん葛藤もしてきました。

その経験があるからこそ、今、
「韓国語を仕事にしてみたいけれど、実力面で不安」
「TOPIKの勉強が行き詰まっていて、諦めそうになっている」

そんな風に
悩んでいる方の気持ちに寄り添いながら、

一緒に次の一歩を考えられたら嬉しいです＾＾

そりゃ少子化が止まらないわけだ

っていう記事を読んだのですが、

女性が仕事も、子育ても、家事も、介護もって

大変だよね・・っていうところまではよかったのですが、

どんどん読み進めても、ずーっと、

男は仕事、女は家庭、

男がメイン、男はエライ

という昭和の考えがベースにあるのです。

男性が家事育児の割合を増やしたら、

そもそも婚姻率が下がるだろうとか　←なぜ？

霞が関の長時間労働を赤沢大臣に改善しろという動きがあったのを

男性大黒柱モデルへの回帰だと言っていたり。

この前、SNSでも見かけたのですが、

「男の方が稼いでるから子育てしなくてもいいだろ？」

って本気で思ってるようなのです。

子育てって、

稼いでいるからとかではなく、

親としての務めじゃないですか。

女性は、自分が稼いでようがいまいが、

調子が良かろうが悪かろうが、

子供をほったらかしにしませんよね。

男ってそんなこともわかってないんだと思ったら、

そりゃ、女性の負担は増えるばかりで、

少子化は止まらないだろうなと思いました。

それで、女性議員たちは一生懸命改善しようとしているけれども、

議員のおじさんたちというのもまた、

こういう昭和な頭のおじさんたちなので、

全然話が通じなくて進まない

・・・というお話をこの前番組でなさってました。

Have you ever been in a conversation and heard a phrase that made you pause? English is full of idioms that sound strange if you take them literally. Imagine a friend makes a very provocative statement, and you hear someone reply, 'Okay, I'll bite.' Are they talking about food? Are they angry? Let's explore this common, slightly playful phrase so you can use it with confidence.

What does it actually mean?

The Confusion: What it sounds like

The literal meaning is connected to fishing. A fish bites the bait on a hook, falling for a trick. So, literally, 'I'll bite' means 'I will use my teeth to bite something,' like an apple or, in this metaphor, a fishing lure.

The Real Meaning: What it actually means

In natural conversation, 'I'll bite' means, 'I will respond to your question or comment, even though I suspect it's a joke, a trick, or meant to be controversial.' It's a way of saying you know someone is trying to get a reaction, but you're willing to engage with their topic for the sake of conversation or fun.

You can use 'I'll bite' when you're slightly skeptical of someone's question or statement, but you're curious enough to respond. It's often used in a friendly, slightly sarcastic way. It signals that you are choosing to enter the discussion. For example, if a friend asks, 'What's one rule you would make if you were king for a day?', you could smile and say, 'Alright, I'll bite,' before sharing your idea. It's a great way to show you're ready to unpack a fun or hypothetical idea.

「23年教壇に立ち、6年海外で暮らして、やっと気づいた。日本って、すごい国だ！」

はじめまして、Harukaです。

最初は「10か月で帰国するつもり」でした。
でも……楽しくて、楽しくて、気づいたら6年経っていました（笑）

出発前の私はというと、とにかく「日本から飛び出したくて」仕方なかったんです。

広い世界を見たい。世界で活躍したい。なんなら日本がちょっと嫌いでした。

でも不思議なことが起きました。

海外に出てはじめて、日本の美しさに気づいたんです。

四季の豊かさ、安全な街、繊細でおいしい食べ物——。
「日本ってこんなにいい国だったの？」と、自分でも驚きました。
そして現地の人たちも、日本に憧れを持っていることを知って、さらにびっくり。

あんなに嫌いだった日本のことが、いつの間にか大好きになっていたのです。

そこで気づきました。

外国人の方もきっと同じ気持ちになれる、と。

日本語を学ぶことで、日本の文化や日常がもっと身近になって、日本のことをもっともっと好きになってほしい。そのお手伝いができたら——それが私が日本語教師を目指した理由です。

日本と世界の架け橋になりたい、と本気で思っています。

レッスンでは、とにかく「楽しさ」を大切にしています。

The FIFA World Cup has finally begun!

Japan faced the Netherlands, one of the teams considered likely to win the tournament, in our opening match. We managed to earn a valuable point with a hard-fought draw.

Our next opponent will be Tunisia.

中文里的“时态”是怎么表达的？ How does Chinese express “tense”

很多学习中文的同学都会有一个困惑：

Many Chinese learners often have this question:

中文到底有没有“时态”？为什么有时候我很难判断一件事情是已经发生、正在发生还是将要发生？
Does Chinese have “tenses”? Why is it sometimes hard to tell whether something already happened, is happening, or will happen?

其实，中文的“时态”不像英语那样通过动词变化来体现。
In fact, Chinese does not express tense through verb changes like English.

它主要依靠：时间词 + 语境 + 结构助词。
Instead, it relies on time words + context + grammatical particles.

简单来说：
Simply put:

?? 中文的时态语法不复杂，但需要在表达时注意使用时间提示词。
?? Chinese tense is not complicated, but you need to pay attention to time expressions.

?? 电话对话 | Phone Conversation

A：喂，杨姐，你在哪呢？
A: Hello, Sister Yang, where are you?

B：我在家。
B: I’m at home.

A：你在家做什么呢？
A: What are you doing at home?

B：我在家看书呢。
B: I’m reading at home.

A：听说你上个星期去了趟上海。
A: I heard you went to Shanghai last week.

B：对，我去比赛了。
B: Yes, I went there for a competition.

A：那你这段时间挺忙啊。
A: You’ve been quite busy recently.

B：对，下周还要去深圳比赛。
B: Yes, I will go to Shenzhen for another competition next week.

A：哦，那出来一起放松一下吧？
A: Oh, then let’s go out and relax together.

B：好啊，你们在哪呢？
B: Sure, where are you?

?? 小知识 | Grammar Notes

1️⃣ 正在进行 | Present Continuous

结构：在 + 动词 + 呢
Structure: zài + verb + ne

例子 Examples:

我在看书呢。
I am reading.
我们在唱歌呢。
We are singing.

?? 表示正在发生的动作
?? Indicates an ongoing action

2️⃣ 已经发生 | Past Tense / Completed Action

关键词：了 / 昨天 / 上个星期 / 刚才
Key markers: le / yesterday / last week / just now

例子 Examples:

我去上海了。
I went to Shanghai.
我上个星期去了上海。
I went to Shanghai last week.

?? “了”表示动作完成
?? “le” indicates completion

3️⃣ 将要发生 | Future Tense

关键词：要 / 会 / 下周 / 明天

中文不通过动词变化表达时态，而是依靠：

Chinese does not use verb conjugation for tense. Instead, it uses:

?? 结构词 Grammatical markers (了 / 在 / 要)
?? 语境 Context

?? 所以学习中文时，不要只翻译单词，要学会“抓时间信号”。

英語のOSを整える｜観察編　is は「＝」じゃない。自分の感触に、自信を持っている感じ

これまでの「英語のOSを整える」シリーズでは、なぜ日本人学習者には英語が苦しく感じやすいのか、なぜ英語が速く聞こえるのか、なぜ"主語"が重要なのかなどについて、日本語と英語の「処理の流れ」の違いという視点から、少しずつ整理してきました。

今回からは、その「英語OS」の視点を使いながら、be動詞、助動詞、発音、曖昧音、前置詞など、英語のさまざまな仕組みを、もう少し具体的に観察していこうと思います。

そして最初のテーマは、英語学習の最初期から、何度も何度も登場し続ける、"be動詞"です。

学校ではよく、「be動詞＝イコール」「be動詞＝〜です」のように習います。

ただ、正直なところ、私自身は、is を「＝」だと感じたことが、あまりありません。

私の感覚では、is は、二つのものを等号で結んでいるというより、自分の感触に、自信を持っている感じに近いのです。

「これは、今、確かにこうだ」。

そう感じている、その確信そのものが、is という形になって出てくる。私には、そう思えるのです。

たとえば、

The room is quiet.

という文。

これを、「部屋＝静か」という計算式のように受け取ることは、実際にはあまりありません。

むしろ最初にあるのは、"シーン…"という、ごくかすかな静けさの感触に近いものかもしれません。

そして、その感触をきっかけとして、the room の像が、カメラのシャッターを切るように、瞬間的に輪郭を持ち始める。そんな感覚に近いように思うのです。

以前の「主語」の回でも少し触れましたが、英語では、環境や刺激を受け取ると、まず何かが、輪郭を持った像として立ち上がりやすい。

ただ、その瞬間に、すべてが完全に固定されているわけではありません。

その周囲には、まだ言葉になりきっていない、感触や、抽象的なエネルギーのようなものが、少し浮遊したまま存在している。

そして、言葉が進むにつれて、その感触が、像と少しずつ紐づきながら、立体感を持ち、徐々に確定していく。そんな流れがあるようにも感じます。

たとえば、

The coffee is good.

という文。

これも、「コーヒー＝良い」というより、まず、"うまっ"という、繊細な反応や感触がある。

そして、その感触をきっかけにして、the coffee の像が、リアル感を伴って立ち上がる。

I'm tired. も同じです。

ここでも、最初から文法を順番に組み立てているというより、まず、身体感覚としての"疲れた…"のような感触がある。

そしてその感触によって、" I "という存在が、自然に輪郭を持ち始める。

ただ、ここでまだ、quiet や tired のような感触そのものは、少し浮遊している状態に近いのかもしれません。

そして現在形のam/is/are は、その感触を、"今そこにリアルに存在しているもの"として、その像へ接続していく。

だから be は、単なる「＝」というより、感触と像を、リアル感を伴って結びつけている流れに近い。そんなふうにも感じます。

そして実は、この "リアル感" は、英語ではかなり重要な感覚のように思います。

ここで言う "リアル" とは、話者が、その状態を "今、確かにそうだ" と、根拠に自信を持って引き受けている感覚のことです。

そして、その「今、確かにそうだ」という引き受けが、現在形 am / is / are という形になって表れます。

I'm tired.

It's cold.

The room is quiet.

などでは、その感触は、話者の中で、"リアルなもの" として、確かに今そうだと引き受けられている。

一方、

The room was quiet.

になると、少し感覚が変わります。

quiet の感触そのものが、消えているわけではありません。像も、ちゃんと存在している。

ただ、話者はそれを、その瞬間の "確かにそうだ" というリアルとしては、引き受けていない。だから、現在形ではなくなります。

ここで言う "リアル" は、単に「実際に存在する／しない」という意味ではありません。

日本語で「時間」というと、何かが流れていったり、様子が変化していったり、距離が遠ざかったり近づいたりするような、"流れ"の感覚を伴うことが多いように思います。

でも英語では、少なくとも私には、単に時間軸を移動しているというより、話者が、その状態を、どれくらい "確かにそうだ" と、根拠に自信を持って引き受けているのか、そのスタンスの方が、強く感じられることがあります。

だから英語の時制は、単なる「時間」というより、その状態を、どのリアル感で引き受けているのか、話者の存在スタンスとも、深く関係しているのかもしれません。

そして実は、この感覚は、英語の発音やリズムにも深く繋がっています。

I'm tired.

It's cold.

She's nice.

などでは、be動詞部分は、かなり弱く短く発音されることがあります。

でも、完全には消えていない。

なぜなら be は、単なる意味単語というより、感触と像を、背景でリアルに結び続けているしくみとして、働いているからです。

一方、日本語では、「寒い」「疲れた」「静かだね」のように、感覚や様子そのものから、自然に言葉が始まりやすい。

だから日本語話者は、英語で be を使おうとすると、「なんで毎回こんなものが必要なの？」と感じやすいことがあります。

でも英語側では、まず、なんらかの心理的・物理的空間のエネルギーに触れた瞬間、それがきっかけとなって、像や輪郭が瞬間的に立ち上がる。

そして、そのエネルギーの感触と像が、リアル感を伴いながら少しずつ紐づき、立体化していく。

だから英語は、単語を順番に組み立てているというより、感触、輪郭、方向性、エネルギーのようなものが、並列的に存在したまま、少しずつ結びつき、意識化し、言葉になっていく感覚に近いのかもしれません。

もちろん、これは「唯一絶対の説明」ではありません。

ただ、英語を長く観察していると、be を、単なる「＝」として扱うより、"立ち上がった像を、どれくらい確かなものとして引き受けているか" として見た方が、英語全体の感覚が、自然につながって見えてくるように感じます。

これからも、be 以外の動詞や助動詞、発音なども、同じ「英語OS」の視点から、少しずつ観察していけたらと思っています。

日銀(にちぎん)は、「日本銀行(にほんぎんこう)」の短(みじか)い言(い)い方(かた)です。

日本銀行(にほんぎんこう)は、日本(にほん)のお金(かね)を管理(かんり)する

特別(とくべつ)な銀行(ぎんこう)です。

わたしたちが、使(つか)っている1,000円札(えんさつ)や、

10,000円札(えんさつ)は、この、日本銀行(にほんぎんこう)が発行(はっこう)しています。

そのほかに、どんなしごとをしているの？

また、日本銀行(にほんぎんこう)は、

物(もの)の値段(ねだん)や、景気(けいき)が大(おお)きく変(か)わりすぎないように、

お金(かね)の流(なが)れを調整(ちょうせい)しています。

ニュースでよく聞(き)く「金利(きんり)」も、

日本銀行(にほんぎんこう)と関係(かんけい)があります。

金利(きんり)が上(あ)がると、お金(かね)を借(か)りるときの負担(ふたん)が大(おお)きくなります。
