Introduction

 

Hi, my name is Jonathan, it's so nice to meet you! I used to live in the UK for the past 25 years. For two years I was travelling through South East Asia, teaching English as a volunteer and online. I now live in Okayama, Japan, with my partner and enjoy green tea, the countryside and the mountains!

 

My teaching experience

 

  • I am TEFL certified (CELTA, 2022)

  • I have 2 years experience as a one to one online teacher on Preply, and Cafe Talk

  • I did some volunteer work in Cambodia teaching teenagers English

  • I used to work in primary schools in the UK, and also as an outdoor teacher, and have lots of experience teaching children English

Teaching approach

 

  • For my themed lessons, I like to prepare lesson materials that are appropriate for different ability levels. Although there is no need for my students to prepare for these lessons, I like to provide them with the topic before the lesson so they can start thinking about it. During the lesson, I provide guidance on vocabulary and grammar as students express their opinions and points of view on the topic. Then, I provide feedback and notes for the student to download. 

  • I like to work with my students' interests, and make lessons practical and fun, so expect topics that are interesting and entertaining, for example, how to discuss crime movies, how to mix a cocktail or discussing your star sign!

  • I also provide tailor made lessons, like listening to pod-casts, videos and newspaper articles. This may be helpful for intermediate students and advanced students who are interested in picking up the nuances of English pronunciation, different writing or speaking styles or academic English. I also teach English for Yoga, Dance and other physical activity teachers who may need specific vocabulary for teaching to English speaking students. 

  • I have experience of teaching English to primary school aged children as well as teenagers, and can help them study for exams (like the Eiken!) practise speaking or just gain more confidence with discussing different topics (I also prepare lesson materials for my younger students). 

  • All of my students can expect a relaxing atmosphere, without any pressure to ‘perform’. I think this encourages students to experiment with new vocabulary, gives them the confidence to make mistakes and helps them to learn and remember English better. 

  • I am half Japanese, and can explain vocabulary and grammar points in Japanese with reasonable fluency. I hope this all helps to provide a better environment for my students to learn English!

Subjects and topics I teach

 

  • Teaching based on different themes each week : These lessons are aimed at advanced beginners, and intermediate level students, and cover themes such as travelling abroad, different cultures and world wide events. During the lesson, I will ask you your opinion on the theme of the week while helping you sound more natural with English expressions. Afterwards, I will provide feedback, and written notes for you to download.

  • Specific teaching for Eiken tests : Whatever grade you are going to take, I can help you or your child prepare for these tests by providing example test questions and giving guidance on how to answer them in English.

  • Preparation for International English exams : Together we can look at topics that are typically covered in these exams. I will provide practice questions and guidance on how to answer orally, or in written English. I have experience helping students with Cambridge English, IELTS and TOEFL exams, and am happy to look at other types of exams as well that are not Eiken, and are not mentioned here!

  • Professional English for the workplace : I can help you to practice for presentations, give guidance on jargon, and teach you the right English to use with your boss, colleagues and subordinates.

  • Listening and Reading practice : Together we can listen to and I can help you to understand pod-casts, videos and newspaper articles in English. Like the theme based lessons, I provide feedback at the end of the lesson, and notes for you to download.

  • English for Yoga and other physical activity instructors : I can provide scenarios, and we can look together at different vocabulary used for these specific types of physical instruction.

  • Free conversation practice : We can discuss any topic you are interested in. This is a particularly good type of lesson for those who are advanced beginners or above, and would like to practise fluency. It could also be helpful for those who have specific areas where they are interested in improving their English, and can bring their English related questions to a lesson. Like the theme based lessons, I provide feedback at the end of the lesson, and notes for you to download. 

A bit about me

 

In the beginning of 2023, I started travelling through South East Asia with my partner. I used to have a comfortable life in the UK with many friends and my two cats, but I decided to give it up for a travel adventure (don’t worry, the cats are being taken care of by my family!). 

 


This is Leek, one of my two black cats safe in the UK!

 

I hope to stay in Japan now, as I want to connect to my Japanese heritage, and hopefully, live here eventually. On weekends, I love to go to onsen, drink green tea and go forest bathing. During the week, I teach English online and am also interested in starting massage training!

This is a friend I made on my travels!

 

If you are interested in trying out English lessons but aren’t sure if any of the lessons are right for you, please ask. I am happy to make adjustments for you if for example you just want to focus on survival English (like being able to order things in English, or sell things to your foreign customers!). I  am flexible, and whatever type of lesson you decide on, rest assured that I like to create a friendly, relaxed and focussed teaching atmosphere for all my students.  I will teach mostly in English but I can help out in Japanese if necessary.
