GaryG118 Tutor Profile
Hello! I'm Gary. I'm from Canada. I live in the western suburbs of Toronto, Canada. I'm really looking forward to meeting you soon!
I grew up multilingual, speaking Tagalog (Filipino) and English side-by-side. I would love to teach you both languages or simply practise speaking them with me!
I have always loved learning different languages. They have always fascinated me. This is why I chose to study East Asian Studies (with concentration in Japanese and Chinese histories, literatures and languages) and Linguistics at the University of Toronto.
In 2005 I joined the Japan Exchange & Teaching (JET) Programme and was placed in a small city in Okayama, Japan, as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) for 5 years. There, I taught English in kindergarten, elementary, junior and senior high schools. Once a week, I would also teach English conversation classes to adult students. I really enjoyed my time in Japan! I can read, write and speak Japanese as well, and so, you can speak to me in Japanese if you do not know how to say what you want in English... but I am really hoping we speak English only during the lessons which will be very good for you!
My former students and fellow teachers used to tell me that I was very friendly, approachable, pleasant and always had full of energy when I taught English in Japan. I will make sure that you get the same kind of vibe and energy during our lessons.
Just a couple of personal rules during our lessons:
- Recording the lesson is prohibited. Let's live in the present moment!
- Due to the nature of this lesson, turning your camera ON is expected. It will be challenging to teach a lesson when we cannot see each other. Facial expressions and hand gestures are very important in teaching a language.
... and that's it!
Now, grab that computer and let's start learning English!! :-)
