Hello, I am Russell, a British businessman, and have spent my whole working life manufacturing clothing and selling to retailers around the world, and I still enjoy nothing more than a good conversation about business.

My sessions are for Japanese professionals who already speak English and would like to feel more confident using their English in real business situations. Our conversations will be interesting and entirely confidential, as you would expect.

We talk the way two business people would talk over a coffee: about customers and suppliers, meetings and negotiations, management, cultural differences, current business issues, or simply something interesting that has happened during your working week.

What you will get from our sessions:

・Practice speaking English naturally and confidently, about real
   business, not textbook situations.
・The expressions a British businessman would actually use, and an
   understanding of how British people do business.
・A short note after each session with the useful expressions that
   came up, so you can look back at them before we talk again.
・If you have a real meeting, presentation or negotiation coming up,
   we can prepare for it together.

A little about me.

I started my first business in my early twenties and have more than 40 years’ experience in garment manufacturing, making clothing for brands including Pringle of Scotland and Vivienne Westwood as well as supplying stores such as Isetan in Japan and Nordstrom in America. For many years, over eighty percent of our production was exported.

Japan has been an important part of my working life. It is a country I adore, and I have worked with Japanese companies for over 30 years. Today I work part-time, advising founder-led businesses and mentoring young designers.

This is not a traditional English lesson. There are no textbooks or prepared exercises, just a proper conversation, and if there is a more natural way to say something, I will show you how.
