Hello Everyone!
My name is Stephen Takayuki Charette.
I am an English-Japanese speaking bilingual conductor.

Let me give you a brief background of what I do.

<As a Musician>

Twenty years ago, after graduating from the Cleveland Institute of Music with a bachelors degree in clarinet performance, I moved to Japan to begin my career as a professional clarinetist. I have gained a lot of experience performing in many concerts, and I'd be happy to share what I've learned over the years. (Music lessons are here)

Then, one day, I decided to become a conductor!  I then went on to graduate with a Masters in conducting at the Tokyo University of the Arts and started my career as a conductor, and I currently conducting various orchestras.

(Here is a picture of me condcuting a dress rehearsal with the Iwaki Symphony Orchestra at Iwaki Alios Main Hall in Fukushima)

<As a Music and English Teacher>

Immediately after arriving in Japan, I also gained experience teaching music in English to students of various nationalities and ages at an International School in Hiroo, Tokyo. There I developed skills as a teacher that are different from my skills as a musician. One of which is how to motivate students and teach them accurately and sincerely.

I've received many requests for private English lessons, and I've guided more than 100 students to passing the Eiken exam, as well as helping students raise their TOEIC scores. My strength is that I can offer lessons tailored to each student's individual needs. For example, casual conversation, pronunciation correction, essay writing, and more.

These days I'm gaining more and more experience conducting large groups of players, so I'm proud to say my teaching methods have been refined even further. In fact, I've received lots of positive feedback from people who've taken my lessons! (Click here for all the reviews I've received on Cafetalk so far.)

<My English Teaching Points>

・ I'm a bilingual teacher, which is surprisingly rare. Follow-ups are available in Japanese, so even beginners can communicate with ease. For intermediate to advanced students, I can explain in Japanese the nuances of native English in more detail, so you can learn to speak and write more fluently.

・ Lesson content can be arranged individually according to the student's wishes. I believe the best way to learn English is to teach students what they are interested in, so customizing lessons to each individual's needs is very important to me. Let's start by making a plan together!

・ In the end, English is a tool, not the goal itself. A high Eiken score or TOEIC score is most rewarding when you can put that English to real use, and there's a lot you can do with it. Learning English dramatically increases the amount of information you can access, it can be applied to business, and it opens the door to communicating with people all over the world. That's why I believe certification exams are best used as a guide to help you reach your larger goal.

・ I can also meet other needs such as English correction, translation, reading aloud, and interview preparation. If you don't see what you're looking for in my list of lessons, please don't hesitate to contact me. I'll be flexible in order to meet your needs!
