nikorin Tutor Profile

I have been teaching a wide range of English, Korean, and Japanese language skills from beginner to advanced level students for over 20 years at universities, vocational schools, and major language schools. I am a trilingual tutor who teaches English, Korean, and Japanese. I will utilize my years of experience in learning multiple languages to give you the best tips on how to master a language in the most efficient way.

If you're looking to learn English and Korean simultaneously, try giving it a shot! The more languages you learn, the faster you will be able to learn another language. Especially in the case of Korean, many words have the same or similar pronunciation and meaning as in Japanese, making it easier to learn. Korean grammar is also very similar to Japanese, making it the easiest language for Japanese speakers to master.

All levels from introductory, beginner, intermediate, advanced, as well as kids to seniors, are welcome!!

I am very good at teaching pronunciation, and I will use my many years of experience to teach you how to communicate well in an international environment, while expressing your thoughts and feelings in an easy-to-understand and detailed manner.

Nice to meet you, my name is nikorin. My nickname “nikorin" comes from the hope that when my students finish their lessons, they will say, “oh, that was another fun and good lesson!” and will be satisfied with their lessons and smile (“niko: ニコッ”).

【Motivation is the key to learning a language】
I became motivated to learn English since I wanted to listen to my favorite international music, such as the Beatles, and learn about the lyrics, and I wanted to enjoy my favorite films to the fullest without subtitles. For example, I listened to the same song over and over again until I memorized it, and acquired accurate pronunciation and intonation. I would write down the dialogues of my favorite films, understand the meaning first, and patiently repeat the same phrases over and over until I was able to speak them naturally.

When I was in college, I belonged to the speech section of an English club called E.S.S. (English Speaking Society), and participated in the annual "All Japan Speech Contest (全国英語弁論大会)". I received thorough and accurate pronunciation instruction from a native English teacher on a one-on-one basis every day. Because of this, I was able to win the contest for two consecutive years. I gained a lot of confidence when speech experts (judges from the speech contest) from the U.S. as well as the U.K. praised my pronunciation, saying that I sounded like a native speaker.

During the three years that I studied abroad in the U.S., I made many friends from various countries. I think this is because I respected the uniqueness of their diverse backgrounds, found their strengths, and kept in touch with them. In the same manner, when I interact with students, I try to find their strengths (that they themselves are not aware of yet), and maximize and develop those strengths.

As for Korean, I had relatives from Seoul who were native Korean speakers living with me at home since elementary school, so I naturally learned to speak daily conversational level Korean. When I was in college, I was very interested in Korean culture, so I stayed in Seoul for a long time (by doing home-stays, etc.) and went to school to learn Korean. Since then, I have been blessed with the opportunity to teach Korean to many people at universities, vocational schools, as well as in language schools, and I truly love and enjoy teaching and consider it my calling.

【Custom-made Lessons】
I offer "custom-made lessons" at the request of  students. When you want to buy clothes, you want them to fit your body in the most comfortable way possible, right? In the same way, I would like to work together with students to create a curriculum that is full of originality, based on what students would like to learn mainly, instead of ready-made lessons that can be taken anywhere.

If you like international dramas and films, a good way to learn practical English is to understand the clever dialogues and phrases, make them your own, and then practice them together so that you can use them in your daily life. If you like to cook, you can learn vocabulary as you learn the names of ingredients.

The "main character of the lesson is the student." Please don't hesitate to tell me what you want to do and what you want to try. I will do my best to help you understand your dream and help you set your goals.

【The Beginning is Half the Story】
An old Korean proverb says, "The beginning is half the story," meaning that once you take the first step, half of the story is already a success. If you start learning a language, make it a part of your daily life, stick with it, and you will gain a lot of strength. "Continuation is power," and "study never betrays you." (^。^)

In the spirit of "we love mistakes," I would like you to talk freely during the lessons without fear of making mistakes. Students who speak a lot tend to improve more quickly. Don't expect to speak perfect English from the very beginning, but have fun and relax as you continue.

【Enjoying Multiculturalism】
I will be more than glad to answer any questions you may have about my long-term experience abroad, such as valuable experiences that you cannot experience in Japan, surprising and interesting episodes (which I have written about in my essay), different cultures related to the U.S., Europe, and Korea, food culture, music, art, and traveling.

When I used to live in Belgium, the land of gourmet food, for three years, I often took the opportunity to visit the best restaurants. The first thing I learned in French was how to make a reservation at a restaurant, and I learned the names of various ingredients so that I could look at the menu and place my order. Thanks to my efforts, I was able to taste delicious recommended dishes wherever I went, and I was able to kill two birds with one stone by improving my French.

【Mental Health Counseling】
I will listen to your concerns and issues that you have been going through in relationships, work, family, love life, and health. I am also available for mental health consultations such as washing your hands excessively, checking your keys over and over again, panic disorders, eating disorders, depression, PTSD, and sleep disorders. I have the duty of confidentiality, so I will never leak the contents of your conversation. Please feel at ease to talk to me. I think it is a natural reaction to feel sad and depressed during difficult times caused by the pandemic. When you are going through a difficult time, don't keep it to yourself, but speak frankly about how you are feeling, and you may find that you feel better or have more clarity in your mind. Please don’t hesitate to come and see me for counseling.

【I also offer language counseling.】
If you feel like you've been in a slump lately, please don't hesitate to ask for advice. We can think together openly and honestly. I've been told that I'm a cheerful, calm, easy to talk to, and a therapeutic person by my students. I am also a curious, unique, and tolerant person, so I am open to any genre of topics, including free talk.

【I can also help with Korean, Japanese, and homework from school or cram school.】
I have taught English, Korean, and Japanese to a wide range of students ranging from middle school students to seniors (over 70 years old) for over 20 years. I love working with people, and I sincerely hope to share the joy of learning languages with as many people as possible. I enjoy learning foreign languages myself, and I have enjoyed learning German and French in my own way. Language learning can be as interesting as you want it to be, depending on your unique ideas. Together, let's use our imaginations and start having fun with your very own original lessons!
