April M. Abate
ESL Tutoring
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME...
Hi! My name is April. I am a 29-year-old American from Arizona, U.S.A.. After five years of traveling and living abroad, I now find myself in Colorado state as an ESL teacher for elementary students. I spend my time practicing yoga, studying the Spanish language, and learning how to be a better teacher! :)
EDUCATION...
My education is all over the map! I have a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Arizona in the U.S.A.. I also have a Master's degree in Elementary Education as well as a Master's degree in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education....which is really just a fancy term for English as a Second Language (ESL) :)
I am a licensed teacher in the state of Colorado. I also hold a 120-hour TESOL certificate from the Asian EFL Journal.
EXPERIENCE...
Between 2009 and 2013 (Wow! Four years! Time flies!), I lived in Seoul, South Korea. When I lived in South Korea, I was an English and science teacher. I also did presentation editing and proofreading for a chemical engineer.
For a short time, I taught ESL students in Siem Reap, Cambodia. When I returned to the States in 2013, I worked closely with Hispanic ESL students in the state of Washington.
Additionally, I co-presented a lecture at the 2012 National KOTESOL Conference in Busan, South Korea. The topic of this lecture was ways to critically engage ESL learners in real world situations.
INTERESTS...
As you can see, I love to travel! I have visited 17 different countries including: Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, England, Morocco, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
I also adore cooking and baking! I am Italian, which means I feel an uncontrollable desire to feed people all the time! Ha! It is not unusual to find me experimenting in the kitchen or fiddling around on the Internet looking for new recipes to try.
In my free time, I enjoy learning about health and fitness. I love practicing yoga, and I am currently training for my third 5K race right now. I am a beginner runner and I am still not very good at it, but I try my best!
I am also a certified scuba diver!
WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT FROM MY CLASSES...
- Fluency: Learn to speak more naturally and less like a textbook robot. This includes speed of comprehension and responses.
- Increase your advanced vocabulary : This includes words for descriptions, business, and academic settings.
- Corrections to pronunciation: American English with very little accent
- Lessons to meet your requests and needs: (i.e., grammar, idioms, American slang, vocabulary, proofreading, inflection when speaking, writing fluency, etc.)
- Timely and honest feedback: I want you to know BOTH your strengths and weaknesses, so you can improve :)
WHAT I EXPECT FROM MY STUDENTS...
- Always try your best! If you don't know the answer or you aren't sure how to share your idea in English...tell me! We can figure it out together.
- Make mistakes!!! Yes, make mistakes! Mistakes during class are the best way to learn because the teacher is there to help you fix them....then you won't make the same mistakes when you are out in the real world.
- Always be polite :)
ONE LAST THING....
Life is already pretty stressful....let's keep our lessons RELAXED and FUN!
I am looking forward to seeing you in class!
My friends....I am in the middle! :)
