Nice to meet you. I’m Hiroco, a Japanese language tutor.

I was born and raised in Osaka and now live in Tokyo. When people think of Osaka, they often think of takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and the lively local dialect. Personally, I love chatting and sharing a good laugh, so my lessons always begin with creating a comfortable, easygoing atmosphere.

I studied Japanese language education at university, learning the inner workings of the language right from the ground up. I hold two teaching credentials and am now in my 12th year of teaching.

● Have you ever felt this way?

  • “I’m trying to speak politely, yet somehow my message doesn’t quite land.”

  • “I want to voice a disagreement or express a problem without creating friction in the relationship.”

  • “I struggle to read between the lines in Japanese workplaces.”

These are questions without textbook answers. Yet, through open conversation, the right words gradually begin to take shape.

● What I hold dear in my lessons

First, listening until the very end. Interrupting to correct every mistake breaks the natural flow of your thoughts. I only highlight what is essential in the moment and send you detailed notes after our session.

Second, looking beyond “That’s just how it is in Japan.” Why is a certain phrase used? What kind of emotional distance or background context lies behind it? How does it sound to others in a professional setting? We will explore these nuances together until it truly resonates with you.

Third, never rushing. It’s completely fine if you can’t express something perfectly right away. I will calmly wait for your words to form. I also adjust my speaking pace and lesson structure based on how you feel that day.

● Who I have walked alongside

I began by teaching elementary and middle school students from South Korea. Later, I taught international students from across Asia at a Japanese language school, and adult learners from Europe and North America at a language institute—guiding students from beginner to advanced levels. Since moving online in 2020, I have conducted around 3,600 lessons.

Today, many of my learners are accomplished professionals—executives at global firms, financial and IT specialists, doctors, and researchers. Because standard textbooks often fall short of their specific needs, we work together to bridge those gaps. Except when using specific books, I create all my own learning materials—especially for advanced and upper-advanced learners, where tailored materials are rare. My students range from elementary pupils to people in their 60s, and from absolute beginners to those using Japanese professionally every day. (Please note that on Cafetalk, my lessons are available for high school students and above.)

● Beyond teaching Japanese

I have spent my career navigating the spaces between languages. I have translated product content, websites, and video subtitles for European companies, and handled English contracts and internal documents in an AI strategy department. In Mumbai, India, I bridged the gap between Japanese researchers and a local team. Across Southeast Asia, I worked on international theatre co-productions and researched community development through drama. Last year in Jakarta, I worked in recruitment sales for Japanese companies.

Working in a language other than your mother tongue—sitting through a meeting where you could only express half of what you meant—these are frustrations I have felt deeply in my own life. Though it may seem like a roundabout path, every experience was about discovering how to truly reach someone across a language boundary. Much of what I share in my lessons stems from these experiences. Beyond practical advice for working in Japan, my global background allows me to view Japanese business customs objectively and put those implicit rules into clear words for you.

● My ongoing commitment as an educator

Even after 12 years, I continue my personal development to stay aligned with current research and trends in Japanese language education, including completing educational training at two universities last year.
